A significant £20 million transformation is set to begin at a key South London railway station, promising to dramatically improve accessibility for millions of passengers.
Work on the major revamp of Wandsworth Town station will commence in February 2026, with the entire project scheduled for completion by the summer of 2027. The centrepiece of the investment is a brand new second entrance on the north side in Odyssey Way.
A New Entrance for a Growing Community
The driving force behind the substantial investment is a surge in passenger numbers, fuelled by new housing developments across Wandsworth and Battersea. Wandsworth Town is the 15th busiest station on the South Western Railway network, recording over 3.75 million passenger entries and exits between April 2024 and March 2025.
Paul McAleer, principal programme sponsor, stated: “We are looking forward to starting work to improve access at Wandsworth Town station. This is a busy and growing station, and these improvements will make a real difference for passengers who currently face barriers using the railway.”
Step-by-Step Construction Timeline
The station will remain open throughout the works, though some platform closures and potential impacts on South Western Railway services are expected. The construction will follow a detailed timeline:
- February 2026: Preparatory works begin with hoardings and ducting.
- April 2026: Installation of a temporary scaffold bridge.
- May to November 2026: Piling works for the foundations of a new lift.
- February 2027: Lift shaft installation.
- Summer 2027: Project completion and opening of the new entrance.
Boosting Accessibility and Future Growth
The new entrance and lift will provide step-free access for the first time in the station's history. This will be a major benefit for passengers with reduced mobility, parents using pushchairs, and travellers with heavy luggage.
Jenny Yates, Wandsworth Council cabinet member for transport, welcomed the project: "I’m delighted that Wandsworth Town station will be getting new lifts and a second entrance. Improving access is hugely important for our residents and the future success of the town centre as it grows."
She added, "By working in partnership with Network Rail, we're pleased that these upgrade works will get underway in 2026 to improve this busy Victorian station for the benefit of the whole community."
The £20 million upgrade represents a critical investment in South London's transport infrastructure, future-proofing a vital hub for its expanding local population.
