Commuters traveling between Reading and London are facing significant rush hour disruption on Monday morning following a points failure near Slough. The fault is affecting services on the Great Western Railway (GWR) network as well as the Elizabeth Line, with delays and cancellations expected until at least 3pm.
Points Failure Causes Widespread Delays
The points failure near Slough has led to major knock-on effects across the GWR network, particularly at London Paddington station. Passengers are being advised to expect cancellations, delays, and last-minute revisions to their journeys. The Elizabeth Line is also experiencing severe delays between Hayes & Harlington and Reading, although a good service is operating on the rest of the line.
To help ease the disruption, tickets are being accepted on London Buses, Great Western Railway, and South Western Railway services. Commuters are urged to check their travel routes before setting out and allow extra time for their journeys.
Jubilee Line Signal Failure Adds to Woes
Separately, there is no service on the Jubilee line between Finchley Road and Waterloo due to a signal failure at Green Park. Engineers are working to fix the issue, but severe delays are also reported on the rest of the line. This adds to the morning's travel chaos, which comes just a day before planned Tube strikes are set to disrupt much of the London Underground network.
Tube Strikes Loom on Tuesday and Thursday
Drivers from the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) are due to walk out on Tuesday and Thursday in a dispute over proposed compressed four-day working arrangements. The strikes will run from midnight to midnight on both days, resulting in no service on the Circle line, the Piccadilly line, the Metropolitan line between Baker Street and Aldgate, and the Central line between White City and Liverpool Street.
While services are expected to run on other London Underground lines, the Tube will start late and finish early on both strike days. Commuters are advised to complete their travels by 9pm to avoid being stranded. The disruption is expected to cause significant inconvenience for passengers across the capital.
