London Mayor Sadiq Khan has provided a detailed update on the introduction of 10 new Elizabeth line trains, currently under construction in Derby, with the first set to begin operations this year and the remainder joining the network in 2027. This announcement comes as Transport for London (TfL) projects a significant increase in passenger usage, particularly once the HS2 link to Old Oak Common station in Ealing becomes operational.
Enhanced Fleet to Meet Growing Demand
The new Class 345 Aventra trains are being built by Alstom in Derby, following an announcement by TfL last October. The Elizabeth line, which already handles one in six rail journeys across the UK, is expected to see even higher ridership with these additions. In response to a query from Labour Assembly Member Anne Clarke, Sir Sadiq emphasised the complexity of developing a new timetable, noting that TfL is collaborating closely with Network Rail, Heathrow Airport, and other operators to ensure seamless integration.
Economic and Commuter Benefits
The investment in these trains, secured through government funding of over £220 million, is highlighted as a high-value initiative. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander previously stated that this project supports more than 1,000 skilled jobs in Derby and aims to modernise London's transport infrastructure. Research from last year indicates that the Elizabeth line generates an additional 71,000 public transport trips in London on weekdays, with notable impacts in areas like Abbey Wood.
In Abbey Wood, approximately 16 percent of trips would not occur without the Elizabeth line, and journey times have been drastically reduced—for example, trips to Central London now take 20 to 40 minutes instead of longer durations, while travel to and from Canary Wharf has been cut in half. This improvement is complemented by recent transport enhancements, such as the launch of the SL11 Superloop bus route and upcoming DLR extensions to Thamesmead from Gallions Reach.
Future Prospects and Infrastructure Integration
With the HS2 Old Oak Common station set to open, TfL anticipates a further surge in Elizabeth line usage, reinforcing its role as a critical component of London's transport network. The new trains are part of a broader strategy to build a more accessible and sustainable railway system, driving economic growth and reducing journey times across the capital and beyond.
