Major TfL Network Closures Confirmed for This Weekend
Transport for London has announced significant closures across its network this weekend, with multiple lines affected by essential engineering works and maintenance projects. The disruptions will impact both Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1, causing considerable inconvenience for commuters, football supporters, and weekend travellers throughout the capital.
Central Line Shutdown and Leyton Station Upgrade
The most substantial closure affects the Central line, where services will be completely suspended between Bethnal Green and Epping, Woodford and Hainault throughout the weekend. This extensive shutdown is necessary to facilitate the ongoing £13.7 million upgrade of Leyton station, funded by the Government's Levelling Up Fund.
During the closure period, engineers will install a prefabricated overbridge and associated steelwork at Leyton Underground station. Additionally, 1.5 kilometres of rail grinding will be carried out between Leytonstone and Woodford via the Hainault Loop, alongside essential tamping work at points and crossings along the route.
The disruption will particularly affect football fans travelling to Leyton Orient's home match against Port Vale on Saturday afternoon. Furthermore, TfL has confirmed that the Friday and Saturday Night Tube services will not operate east of Liverpool Street station during this period.
Overground and DLR Service Reductions
Three London Overground routes will experience partial closures this weekend alongside DLR disruptions. On Sunday, the DLR will be suspended between Tower Gateway and Shadwell stations due to third-party engineering works. Passengers are advised to use alternative Tube or London Overground services, or local bus routes as replacements.
National Rail and Additional TfL Disruptions
Passengers will face further complications from National Rail closures, with no trains operating from Kings Cross station due to planned upgrade works. This will severely impact Thameslink, Great Northern, Lumo and LNR services throughout the weekend.
Travellers heading north are advised to use London Euston station, take Thameslink services to Bedford, or utilise Greater Anglia routes to Hertford East and Cambridge North. Affected passengers can use their tickets on London bus routes at no additional cost, or on alternative Tube services where available.
Additional disruptions include reduced train services between Clapham Junction and London Waterloo for signalling works, with Queenstown Road station completely closed on both Saturday and Sunday.
