Easter Rail Shutdown: West Coast Mainline Faces Six-Day Closure for £400m Upgrade
Rail passengers planning journeys over the Easter break are being alerted to significant disruptions due to a six-day shutdown on Britain's largest intercity line. Engineering work will halt all mainline services on the west coast mainline between London Euston and Milton Keynes from Good Friday, 3 April, through to Wednesday, 8 April.
Scope of the Closure and Additional Service Halts
In addition to the primary closure, there will be no service between Preston and Lancaster on the line on 4-5 April. Network Rail has emphasized that this work is a critical component of a £400 million project aimed at enhancing the reliability of the west coast mainline. Bank holidays, including Easter, are selected for such closures as they represent some of the least busy periods for rail travel.
Jake Kelly, Network Rail's regional director for the north-west and central region, stated, "The four-day period at Easter gives us a valuable opportunity to complete projects that simply can’t be delivered during a normal weekend. This ensures we maximise the time our teams are out working on the tracks."
Key Engineering Projects During the Shutdown
Specific upgrades during the shutdown include laying new track at Willesden in north London, conducting repairs and upgrades at Harrow and Wealdstone station, and reinforcing a bridge in Ledburn, Buckinghamshire, to prevent future damage. This follows a similar four-day closure over the Easter break last year, underscoring the ongoing nature of these vital improvements.
Kelly added, "We know how important bank holidays are – particularly at Easter, when families and friends come together. That’s why we work hard to keep as much of the network open as possible while carrying out these vital upgrades."
Broader Impact on Great Britain's Rail Network
Beyond the west coast mainline, engineers will be engaged in over 270 other upgrade projects across Great Britain's rail network during the Easter period. Passengers should anticipate various service adjustments:
- Avanti West Coast will operate services between Preston and Carlisle via the Settle and Carlisle line.
- Anglo-Scottish services will be diverted via Dumfries and Kilmarnock from Good Friday to Easter Monday.
- Services between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction will be reduced.
- No trains will run between Winchester and Southampton in Hampshire, or between Herne Bay and Ramsgate in Kent.
Kelly advised, "Passengers will see some changes, and it’s a good idea for people to check before they travel." This widespread engineering effort highlights the extensive maintenance required to sustain and improve the UK's rail infrastructure, with the Easter shutdown serving as a pivotal window for these essential works.
