Easter Travel Chaos: Major London Train Station to Close for Six Days

One of London's busiest railway stations will close for almost a week during the Easter break, causing significant disruption for thousands of passengers. Euston station, famous for its signature 'Euston rush' where commuters dash to platforms, will shut for six consecutive days in April to allow Network Rail to carry out essential engineering works.

The closure will run from Good Friday, April 3, through Wednesday, April 8, meaning there will be no Avanti West Coast or London Northwestern Railway trains departing from or arriving at Euston during this period. All trains between Euston, Scotland, the North West of England, and the West Midlands will instead terminate at Milton Keynes Central.

Replacement Services and Travel Advice

National Rail has confirmed that a rail replacement bus service will operate between Milton Keynes Central and Euston throughout the closure. Chris Liptrot, Avanti's operations director, emphasized the importance of planning ahead: 'While Network Rail carries out this essential work, we'll be operating an amended timetable with journeys to and from London Euston involving changes or rail replacement buses. We strongly advise customers making journeys to or from London Euston between 3 and 8 April to plan ahead and check the National Rail website before travelling.'

Passengers traveling to airports for Easter getaways should also be aware of additional disruptions. Heathrow Airport trains will have a late start on Sunday, April 5, while on the Stansted route, tracks will be closed between Stratford and Tottenham Hale over Easter until 6pm daily, requiring travel via London Liverpool Street instead.

Additional Rail Disruptions Across London

The Easter period will see multiple other rail closures across the capital. A reduced service will run between Waterloo and Clapham Junction stations due to railway works from Good Friday through Monday, April 6, with passengers required to change trains at Clapham Junction. Queenstown Road Battersea station will also close over the Easter weekend.

Tube and TfL Network Closures

While most Tube lines will operate normally, several TfL routes will be affected by maintenance works:

  • London Underground: Hammersmith & City line closed April 3-6; Bakerloo line closed from Stonebridge Park to Harrow & Wealdstone April 3-6 and from Queen's Park to Harrow & Wealdstone April 4-5; District line no service from Whitechapel to Upminster and Earl's Court to Kensington (Olympia) April 3-6; Northern line no service between Camden Town and Kennington via Bank after 10pm from Monday through late spring.
  • Elizabeth line: No trains between Paddington and Ealing Broadway until 7:45am on April 5; trains won't stop at Acton Main Line, Hanwell, and West Ealing; reduced service between Paddington and Maidenhead and from Abbey Wood to Heathrow T4.
  • London Overground: Lioness line no trains from Willesden Junction to Watford Junction and reduced service between Euston and Willesden Junction on April 3 and 6; no trains between Euston and Watford Junction on April 4-5; Mildmay line closure between Willesden Junction and Richmond on April 5.
  • Docklands Light Railway (DLR): No trains from Bank and Tower Gateway to Poplar and West India Quay between April 3 and April 8.

Travelers are urged to check the National Rail website and TfL updates regularly for the latest information and to plan their journeys carefully during this period of extensive disruption.
