Easter Travel Chaos Warning: Major Rail and Road Disruptions Expected

Travel expert Simon Calder has issued a stark warning about significant Easter travel disruptions affecting millions of Britons planning journeys from London and across the country. The holiday weekend, traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the year, is expected to be exceptionally challenging due to extensive engineering works and anticipated heavy road traffic.

Major Rail Network Closures

Speaking exclusively to the Independent, Calder detailed substantial rail disruptions that will impact numerous routes. The entire 50-mile line between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central will be completely closed due to Network Rail engineering work. This closure will affect intercity services to the West Midlands, North West England, North Wales, and Southern Scotland.

"Easter travel is going to be disrupted for many people, I'm sorry to say," Calder stated. "Services will begin at Milton Keynes Central with bus replacement services operating from Bedford, which travelers can reach from St Pancras Station and various London stations via Thameslink."

Additional rail disruptions include:

  • Complete closure of the line from Leeds via Garsforth to York
  • Closure of the line through Huddersfield with diversions and delays expected
  • Shutdown of the route from Cambridge to King's Lynn
  • Closure of the line from Winchester to Southampton

These widespread closures will necessitate numerous rail replacement bus services across multiple regions, potentially adding significant time to journeys.

Road Traffic Predictions

Calder also warned of substantial road congestion throughout the Easter weekend, particularly on Thursday and Friday (April 2-3). He advised travelers to either "leave early or leave late" to avoid the worst of the traffic.

"Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are going to be the busiest, especially during the day from about 10 in the morning to 7 in the evening," Calder explained. "Saturday is looking quite busy, especially heading south on the M25 from the M1 through to Heathrow, and on the M5 going south from the M4 at Bristol."

Easter Monday is expected to bring its own challenges, with northbound traffic on the M5 likely to experience delays from Taunton up through Bristol, and the M25 anticipated to be particularly congested.

Ferry Travel Advice

For those traveling to Dover for ferry crossings, Calder offered more positive news based on conversations with Port of Dover CEO Doug Bannister. Travelers are advised not to arrive more than two hours before their scheduled sailing time.

"We will do our absolute best to get you through smoothly," Bannister assured. "If you do happen to miss your ferry, you will be rebooked without fuss and without charge on the next available sailing."

Despite soaring costs for petrol, diesel, and flights due to ongoing international conflicts, millions of Britons are still expected to travel during the Easter period, whether staying within the UK or flying abroad. Calder's warnings highlight the importance of careful planning and preparation for what promises to be a particularly challenging travel weekend.
