Major Disruption Ahead: Euston Station to Shut for Six Days in April 2026
Network Rail has announced that London Euston Station, one of the capital's busiest rail hubs, will be closed for six consecutive days in April 2026, causing significant travel disruptions over the Easter bank holiday period. The closure is scheduled from Good Friday, April 3, through Wednesday, April 8, impacting thousands of passengers traveling between London and northwest England.
Impact on West Coast Main Line Services
The West Coast Main Line (WCML), which connects London to Glasgow via key cities such as Milton Keynes, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and Edinburgh, will be heavily affected. During the six-day closure, all Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services south of Milton Keynes Central will be replaced by buses. Passengers are advised to expect longer journey times, increased crowding, and additional changes or rail replacement buses for trips to the northwest from Euston.
Furthermore, on April 4 and 5, there will be no train service between Preston and Lancaster, adding to the widespread disruption across the network.
Essential Upgrades Driving the Closure
The closure is necessary to facilitate a major programme of essential upgrades along the West Coast Main Line between London and Milton Keynes. Network Rail has outlined specific works totaling millions of pounds, including £8.4m in track work at Willesden and over £7m in signalling upgrades just south of Leighton Buzzard. Additional improvements involve replacing overhead line equipment in Wembley, undertaking bridge waterproofing at Ledburn, and upgrading canopies and platforms at Harrow & Wealdstone station.
These efforts are part of a broader £400m project aimed at enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the West Coast Main Line, one of Europe's busiest mixed-use railways.
Overground and Underground Service Adjustments
While Euston's London Underground station is expected to remain open during the closure, several Transport for London (TfL) services will face disruptions. The Lioness Overground line will be closed between Euston and Watford Junction on Saturday, April 4, and Sunday, April 5. Similarly, the Bakerloo line will have no trains between Queens Park and Watford Junction on those same dates.
