Shocking CCTV Captures Alleged Attempt to Push Commuter Towards Moving Train
In a terrifying incident that has raised serious concerns about commuter safety, a hooded man was captured on CCTV allegedly attempting to push an unsuspecting passenger towards a moving train at Northgate station in Seattle, Washington. The chilling footage, which has since emerged in court documents, shows the moments leading up to the near-fatal attack on March 19, shortly before 6 p.m.
The Frightening Sequence of Events
The victim, identified in legal filings as Peter Walbrun, was reportedly scrolling through articles on his phone while waiting on the platform. Unbeknownst to him, a stranger later identified as Elisio Melendez, 26, was lurking behind a pillar just feet away. The surveillance video depicts Melendez peeking from behind an elevator, seemingly checking for an approaching train.
As the front of a train whizzed towards the platform, Melendez suddenly lunged at Walbrun with enough force to almost knock him off his feet. The pair then wrestled perilously close to the moving train, with the assailant allegedly trying to push the commuter a second time before escaping the scene.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Police officers tracked down Melendez following the incident, arresting him for attempted second-degree murder. He was reportedly traced to a health facility near the train station. During questioning, Melendez allegedly told detectives that the man in the footage was someone who "maybe looked like him" and referred to "my twin that I don't have."
Melendez was arraigned on Tuesday, with a judge ordering a competency evaluation to determine his mental capacity. He remains in custody after a $750,000 bond was set. Prosecuting Attorney Leesa Manion described the case as "shocking" and stated it "unquestionably demonstrate[s] the extreme danger the defendant poses to the public."
Background and Previous Charges
While the 26-year-old has not been convicted of any previous crimes, he faced charges in 2019 for allegedly stabbing his sister in the stomach with a kitchen knife. Those charges included assault and domestic violence. His case was reportedly dismissed in 2021 after he was found incompetent to stand trial due to schizophrenia and a history of mental health treatment.
Melendez has not entered a plea for the current charges against him. The incident has sparked renewed discussions about safety measures at public transportation hubs and the handling of individuals with mental health issues in the criminal justice system.
