Slovakia Train Crash Injures Dozens After Red Light Run

Major Train Collision Near Bratislava Leaves Dozens Injured

A serious railway accident occurred in Slovakia on Sunday evening when two trains collided near the town of Pezinok in the Bratislava region. The incident happened at approximately 7:30 PM on November 9, 2025, and resulted in numerous injuries after one train allegedly passed a red signal.

Emergency Response and Passenger Accounts

According to Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok, who spoke from the crash site, eleven people were transported to hospital while dozens more sustained minor injuries. The minister revealed that approximately 800 people were onboard the trains at the time of the collision, many of them students.

A spokesperson for University Hospital Bratislava confirmed hours after the incident that two patients were undergoing surgery and anticipated this number might increase. Police quickly responded to the scene and confirmed that both train drivers tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

Investigation Points to Signal Violation

Slovak police stated on Facebook that preliminary information indicated there was no head-on collision or derailment. Instead, evidence suggests one train ran a red light and was struck from behind by another express train.

Ivan Bednarok, head of the Slovak railway service ZSR, described the event as "an extraordinary incident." He noted that one train was in a location where it shouldn't have been after clearly passing a red signal and leaving a stop improperly. Bednarok estimated that the second express train collided with it from behind at a speed exceeding 100 km/h.

This marks the second significant train collision in Slovakia within the past month, following another incident in eastern Slovakia on October 13 that injured 91 people. A full investigation into the causes of this latest accident is now underway.
