London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Transport for London (TfL) are advocating for the inclusion of Surrey and Berkshire within the TfL network. While some Londoners may resist the idea, the proposal could bring significant benefits.
Heathrow Expansion Drives Rail Link Plans
The push comes ahead of Heathrow Airport's £49 billion expansion, which includes a third runway and terminal upgrades. Transport officials warn that passenger numbers could surge by 80 percent, with a 150 percent increase in public transport trips, necessitating additional rail connections from Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire, as reported by MyLondon.
Reducing Pollution and Traffic
To prevent a sharp rise in air pollution around Heathrow, Mayor Khan urges the government to commit to no traffic increase on the M25, meaning airport access would rely heavily on public transport.
TfL has prioritized the long-proposed Southern and Western rail links. The Southern link would lay new tracks from Terminal 5 station to Staines, connecting with South Western Railway services to Waterloo and Clapham Junction via Richmond or Hounslow. A branch to Virginia Water would provide direct services to Surrey, Berkshire, and Hampshire.
The Western rail link would require a new tunnel between Heathrow and Langley, allowing passengers to bypass central London to reach the airport.
Economic Viability
The Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce supports the expansion, citing lower-than-expected construction costs. They estimate that if the rail link opens by 2032, a positive return on investment could be achieved by 2044.
These proposals aim to enhance connectivity while supporting sustainable transport and reducing environmental impact.
