Central Line Chaos: Severe Delays Hit London Underground Rush Hour
Central Line severe delays after Woodford signal failure

Commuters across London faced a morning of travel chaos on Wednesday as severe delays crippled a major Tube line during the peak rush hour.

Signal Failure Sparks Widespread Disruption

A significant signal failure at Woodford station has thrown the Central line into turmoil. The issue has caused severe delays along the entire length of the line, with Transport for London (TfL) confirming two key sections are suspended. There is no service running between Leytonstone and Loughton, and the branch line between Woodford and Hainault via Grange Hill is also closed.

Commuters Left in Quiet Chaos

Pictures from Loughton station captured the quiet chaos as stranded passengers tried to figure out their routes to work. In a small piece of relief, a station clerk informed MyLondon that an eastbound shuttle service is operating between Epping and Loughton only. This limited service offers some connectivity but falls far short of meeting the demand of a normal weekday morning.

Knock-on Effects and Alternative Travel

The disruption is not isolated to the Central line. The Bakerloo line is also experiencing minor delays due to train cancellations, compounding travel woes for many. TfL is advising all passengers needing to use the affected services to reroute their journeys using the official TfL journey planner. The advice is to allow significant extra time for travel and to consider alternative Tube lines, buses, or other transport modes where possible.

The disruption began on the morning of Wednesday, 15 January 2026, with the situation ongoing. Senior Reporter Rafi Mauro-Benady is covering the incident for MyLondon and has asked anyone affected by the disruptions to make contact.
