Call Of Duty fans are more excited about ports of classic games than the next brand-new entry, based on social media engagement metrics. Following the reveal of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Activision announced another Call Of Duty title is set to arrive on PlayStation this year.
As confirmed by original developer Treyarch, ports of Call Of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 will be released on PlayStation platforms in July. These versions will include the campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes from both titles.
The announcement was relatively low-key, made via a tweet, but it has generated more buzz on social media than the reveal for Modern Warfare 4. On X, the Black Ops ports’ announcement garnered over 176,000 likes and 38,000 retweets. In comparison, the reveal trailer for Modern Warfare 4 on X received 78,000 likes and 16,000 retweets.
Based on replies, the Black Ops tweet accumulated 6,300 comments versus 3,700 for Modern Warfare 4. A similar trend is visible on Instagram. Treyarch’s announcement post for Black Ops generated 572,000 likes, whereas the reveal for Modern Warfare 4 on the Call Of Duty account attracted 257,000 likes. The latter has more replies, with 7,011 versus 4,122, but it also had more time to circulate.
While these metrics likely do not reflect how well each game will sell, they serve as a barometer of the dwindling enthusiasm for modern Call Of Duty titles among fans. If there is a lack of excitement around Modern Warfare 4, it may be due to the negativity surrounding Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7. Sales for last year’s sequel were notably lower than previous entries, and it was criticized by fans and critics for its poor campaign and use of generative AI. Activision even issued an apology of sorts following the game’s launch.
It remains to be seen if Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 can turn things around, but there are some promising aspects. The sequel mostly takes place in Korea, and developer Infinity Ward is promising notable gunplay tweaks. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on October 23, 2026.
