A charity shop manager has shared her top tips for shoppers seeking the best bargains, emphasizing the importance of timing and patience. Amy Lorenz, who manages the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance store, revealed that Saturday afternoons are the optimal time to visit for fresh stock.
Best day for new stock
According to Lorenz, her shop removes items that have been on the floor for three weeks on Friday evenings and puts out new stock on Saturday mornings. "Coming after lunch will ensure you see new stock," she told Sky News. However, she noted that rotation schedules vary by store, so shoppers should ask staff at their local charity shop which day they refresh stock.
Seasonal patterns and tips
Lorenz observed that the shop receives the most donations during post-Christmas and spring clear-out seasons. She recommends exploring every section of the store, regardless of size, taste, or gender, as stock and layout constantly change. Shoppers may find misplaced items or unexpected treasures.
Her final advice is to remain patient. "If you are hunting for a particular item, you need to accept that thrifting is a marathon, not a sprint," she said. "Keep looking and one day the perfect item will be there waiting for you."
Misconceptions about charity shops
Lorenz highlighted that charity shops offer a wide range of items from diverse donors, including stylish younger people and working professionals, not just outdated clothing. She urged donors to consider whether they would give an item to a friend before donating, especially for unhygienic items like used underwear.
