Choo-Choo Charles, an indie horror game that fuses a monstrous spider-train with survival mechanics, has been praised by reader Michael Veal for its haunting atmosphere and addictive gameplay. Discovered by chance on the PlayStation Store, the game presents a nightmarish vision of Aranearum Island, where players must upgrade their train using scraps to defeat the relentless Charles.
A Nightmarish Premise
The game begins with a silver-haired man named Eugene transporting the player to Aranearum Island. There, players are given a worn steam engine that serves as both transport and weapon. Despite its name, the engine requires no coal, and logic takes a backseat in this dreamlike setting. The island is ruled by Charles, a monster that is half giant spider and half blood red steam engine, inspired by Tom Coben's horror animation, Thomas the Tank Engine, and a Stephen King story, according to online speculation.
Gameplay and Scraps
Charles emits a mournful toot that signals his approach, forcing players to prepare by completing fetch quests for island characters. These quests reward scraps, the only currency, used to upgrade the train's speed, weaponry, armor, and condition. Scraps are found in yellow chests and scattered across the map, driving the player's exploration. Upgrading the train allows better defense against Charles, and damaging him occasionally yields more scraps.
Atmosphere and Characters
While graphics are low-rent, with characters not moving their lips, the game oozes atmosphere. Characters include a witch, a pickle-loving woman, and masked henchmen who shoot on sight. Underground mineshafts offer opportunities to steal monster eggs, crucial to the main plot. The final boss battle culminates in a satisfying cut scene.
Veal concludes: "End verdict: I liked playing Choo-Choo Charles, and I appreciated Aranearum Island’s unhappy and haunting atmosphere. To use a railway analogy, a punt on an indie game put me on the wrong side of the tracks and I liked it."
