Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is reportedly set to join the second series of Netflix's hit drama Adolescence, according to a source close to the production. The four-episode miniseries, which captivated audiences with its story of a young man's descent into the 'manosphere' after murdering a 13-year-old classmate, is now being developed for a second season.
Winslet's Potential Role
'It's happening and in development. There's excitement that Kate [Winslet] is on board,' a source told the Daily Mail. Winslet, 50, is best known for her roles in Titanic, The Holiday, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2009 for her performance in The Reader and has been nominated for her work in Sense & Sensibility, Titanic, Iris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Little Children, and Steve Jobs. Her TV credits include HBO's Mare of Easttown, Mildred Pierce, and The Regime. In 2022, she appeared in the Channel 4 film I Am Ruth, which explored the relationship between a woman and her troubled teenage daughter, played by Winslet's real-life daughter, Mia Threapleton.
Series Background
The original series starred Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty, and made a star of Owen Cooper, who played killer Jamie. Plans for a second series were confirmed by Stephen Graham, who serves as both star and executive producer. However, he noted that the project is still 'three or four years' away.
Owen Cooper's Record
In a notable coincidence, Winslet was 20 when she won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role at the SAG Awards in 1996 for Sense & Sensibility, making her the youngest actor to win a SAG award. That record stood until this year, when it was broken by 16-year-old Owen Cooper. Cooper also made history as the youngest actor to win an Emmy last September. Accepting the award in Los Angeles, he said: 'Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple years back, I didn't expect to be even in the United States, never mind here. But I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and you step out your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.' He added: 'I was nothing about three years ago, and I'm here now.'
Future Series Direction
Writer Jack Thorne has revealed that the second series will not revisit the Miller family, as 'any attempt to go back into it would weaken the story we've told already.' He also ruled out exploring the 'femosphere,' the female equivalent of the manosphere, stating: 'I don't think I'm the right writer for that, for very crucial reasons. But I look forward to someone doing a show about it.'
