A fatal accident occurred in Munich, Germany, early this morning when two freight trains collided on a bridge, resulting in one death. The incident took place around 1:40 am on the Schleißheimer Straße bridge in the Milbertshofen district, causing two carriages to plunge approximately five metres onto the road below.
Collision Details
The trains were engaged in shunting operations—a process where trains are rearranged within a station or depot—at the time of the collision. A firefighter on the scene described the event to German news agency dpa as 'unbelievable that two trains collided and fell off a bridge.'
Photographs from the scene show the two wagons hanging off the bridge in a distinctive 'V' shape between Frankfurter Ring and Max-Diamand-Straße. German railway operator Deutsche Bahn confirmed that the overturned carriages were empty at the time of the accident.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the collision remains unclear. Officials have not disclosed the specific cargo carried by the trains but have assured that it was not hazardous materials. The incident has not affected regional or long-distance train services.
Recovery Efforts
Police released a video showing salvage operations using cranes to recover the derailed trains. Schleißheimer Straße is closed in both directions between Moosacher Straße and Max-Diamand-Straße until the recovery is complete. Authorities stated that the work 'will continue well into Saturday, perhaps even into Sunday,' and promised to notify the public when the road reopens.
