Serious Incident Declared After Light Aircraft Crashes into Reservoir
Police have declared a serious incident following the crash of a light aircraft into Hanningfield Reservoir in Essex. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, prompting a large-scale emergency response and an ongoing investigation.
Details of the Flight and Crash Site
The aircraft, identified as a Beagle B121 Pup manufactured in 1970 and registered as G-AZDG, departed from North Weald Airfield at 11.54am. It was en route to London Southend Airport but failed to reach its destination. Data from Flightradar24 indicates the flight ended near the middle of the reservoir at approximately 2.03pm.
The crash site, a popular beauty spot near Chelmsford, has seen the nature reserve surrounding the reservoir closed to the public. Flowers have already been left at the fence by members of the public as a mark of respect. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the number of people on board or any potential casualties.
Multidisciplinary Investigation Underway
A significant investigation is now in progress. Essex Police are working in close coordination with the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB). Chief Superintendent Waheed Khan of Essex Police stated that they are "still in the early stages" of determining what happened.
The AAIB confirmed it has launched a full investigation and deployed a multidisciplinary team of inspectors to the accident site. The Essex Wildlife Trust, which manages the Hanningfield Reservoir Nature Discovery Park, announced the site remains closed. A spokesperson said they are supporting the emergency services and hope to reopen soon, with updates to be provided via their website and social media.
Key organisations involved, including Southend Airport, North Weald Airfield, and Epping Forest District Council, have declined to comment, citing the ongoing police-led investigation.
