A significant amount of Prosecco has been spilled across the M4 motorway in Berkshire following a collision involving two lorries. One of the vehicles was transporting 20 tonnes of Italian sparkling white wine when its container was torn open, scattering broken glass bottles and liquid across the carriageway.
Crash Details and Emergency Response
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 AM on Monday between junction 13 for the Chieveley Interchange and junction 14 for Hungerford. Thames Valley Police reported that one lorry partially lifted off the ground, leading to a complex rescue operation. One person sustained minor injuries and received immediate emergency care from firefighters from Newbury, Theale, and Caversham Road. No one was trapped.
The westbound lanes were closed until after 3 PM to allow for the recovery of the lorries and the extensive cleanup. National Highways noted that one trailer detached from its cab and ended up on top of the nearside barrier, with significant debris scattered across the roadway. The agency described the recovery and cleanup as protracted.
Police and Fire Service Comments
Thames Valley Police humorously remarked that the scene was not quite the roadside refreshment anyone had in mind. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that firefighters were on site for about one hour and ten minutes before handing over to National Highways. Traffic officers assisted with traffic management during the closure.
National Highways stated that the road was closed for several hours due to the complexity of removing the trailer and clearing the debris and spilled wine.
