A woman in her 20s has died following a collision involving a lorry and a cyclist in south London, police have confirmed. Emergency services were called to Kennington Park Road, SE11, near Oval tube station, at 10:56 am on Wednesday, 29 April, after reports of a serious crash.
Emergency response
Officers from the Metropolitan Police, the London Ambulance Service, and London’s Air Ambulance attended the scene. Paramedics treated the cyclist, but she died shortly after emergency crews arrived. Her next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
Arrest made
The lorry driver, a man in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.
Detective Sergeant James Moody, from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: “Our thoughts remain with the young woman’s loved ones at this incredibly distressing time. Though we have made an arrest, it is vital we try to build up a full picture of this incident. We are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any relevant information to come forward and speak to police - particularly anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage.”
Appeal for witnesses
Police are appealing for anyone with information or footage that could assist the investigation. Witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting CAD 2693/29APR. The road was closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene, causing disruption to traffic in the area. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about cyclist safety on London’s roads, with campaigners calling for improved infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
