Temaki Sushi Bar Returns: London's First Handroll Specialist Opens in Mayfair
Temaki Sushi Bar Opens New Restaurant in Mayfair

One of London's most celebrated sushi bars is set for a high-profile return, this time in the heart of the capital's luxury district. Temaki, the city's first restaurant dedicated to handroll sushi, will open a new site on Maddox Street in Mayfair in February, following the closure of its original Brixton Market location last summer.

From Brixton Buzz to Mayfair Elegance

When it launched in 2021, Temaki quickly garnered a cult following in south London. Its innovative focus on temaki – the cone-shaped, hand-held sushi – earned praise from critics, including a Time Out review that highlighted its "triple whammy of expertise, exceptional produce and classy execution." Despite its success, the Brixton venue closed its doors. Now, founder Alexander Dupee is leading the brand's resurgence in a central London setting, promising to build on its earlier achievements.

"We loved our time in Brixton, and with our new creative team we are so excited to build on that success in central London, on Mayfair's Maddox Street," Dupee said. "We've been working on some fun new dishes and will of course serve our signature handrolls - I can't wait to open the doors!"

A Two-Floor Dining Experience Inspired by California and Japan

The new Temaki restaurant at 11 Maddox Street, W1S 2QF, will offer a significantly expanded experience across two levels. The design includes a 16-seat upper room centred around a sushi counter, providing an intimate chef-led experience. Downstairs, a 28-seat space takes inspiration from Japanese listening bars, creating a relaxed atmosphere for enjoying music alongside food and drink.

While the signature handrolls will remain the star attraction, the menu will expand with Californian sushi bar influences. Diners can expect dishes like crispy rice topped with premium fish and A4 wagyu sliders. The drinks offering will feature sake, wine, and a selection of cocktails.

What is Handroll Sushi?

For the uninitiated, temaki is the Japanese term for handroll sushi. Distinct from nigiri or maki rolls, it is characterised by its cone shape and is designed to be eaten with your fingers. The core components remain the same: vinegared rice, nori (dried seaweed), and fillings which typically include fresh fish, seafood, and vegetables.

The restaurant will operate from 12pm to 3pm and 5pm to 10pm, offering both lunch and dinner service. This move signals a confident step for a beloved London food concept, transplanting its vibrant energy from a market stall to a permanent home in one of the world's most prestigious neighbourhoods.
