Two London-based fish and chip shops have earned a coveted spot among the UK's elite, securing recognition in the prestigious Fry Awards 2026. The annual list names the top 50 fish and chip establishments across the country, from takeaways and restaurants to mobile units.
The Secret Judging Process
The winners were selected after months of covert assessments by mystery diners. These undercover judges evaluated entries based on a strict set of criteria, including food quality, premises cleanliness, staff expertise, value for money, ease of ordering, and social media presence.
Now in their fourteenth year, the awards celebrated a high standard from this year's entrants. The anonymous reports were filled with praise, with one diner noting, "The food was piping hot and had obviously been freshly prepared." Another highlighted excellent teamwork and customer service in a busy outlet, while a third raved about "beautiful, succulent fish" paired with "lovely and golden" chips.
London's Award-Winning Chippies
The capital's two honoured establishments are Batterfly Fish and Chips in Surbiton and The Village Fish and Chips in Orpington.
Batterfly Fish and Chips, Surbiton
Batterfly Fish and Chips prides itself on a passion for freshness, aiming to serve light and flavourful dishes that defy the stereotype of heavy, greasy fare. They are renowned for their perfectly cooked, moist cod encased in a crispy batter, served alongside fluffy, golden chips.
This commitment has won them ardent fans. Customer Sam Hillier declared it "simply the best fish and chips I've had!", applauding the portion size and value for money. Ben Edwards echoed the sentiment, calling it the "best Fish and Chip Takeaway," with particular praise for the mix of big fluffy chips and little crispy ones, and batter that is "crispy and perfectly, not too thick."
The Village Fish & Chips, Orpington
This family-run business has achieved a remarkable hat-trick, having now been recognised by the Fry Awards in 2024, 2025, and 2026. Run for over 15 years by husband-and-wife team Andy and Serena Pybus, they insist on the freshest ingredients, delivered daily.
Andy Pybus attributes their success to consistency. "The good food comes from consistency and them always doing the same thing week in week out," he said. This approach fosters a familiar, welcoming environment where staff know regulars by name. Online reviews affirm their status, with one patron stating it offers "great service, fair prices and quality food," while another simply called it the "best fish and chip shop by far anywhere."
A Celebration of Quality
The inclusion of these two London businesses in the Fry Awards 2026 underscores the enduring appeal and high standards of the classic British chippy. It highlights not just the quality of the food but the importance of service, consistency, and community connection in these much-loved local institutions.
