JMW Real Estate Leader Expresses Confidence Amid Housing Market Uncertainties
Sophie Maryan, the head of residential real estate at JMW Solicitors, has revealed she remains optimistic about the housing market despite broader economic challenges. In an exclusive interview, the 39-year-old lawyer detailed her career trajectory, personal philosophy, and views on London's property landscape.
From McDonald's to Boardroom: A Determined Career Path
Maryan's journey into law began during her school days in Colchester, where she developed an early fascination with legal careers. Her first job at age 16 was working Saturdays at a local McDonald's in Colchester, an experience she credits with teaching valuable customer service skills. She later studied at Essex University before entering the legal profession as a County Court advocate representing high street lenders in debt recovery claims across Essex, London, and Suffolk.
"Once that thought was etched in my mind, I was determined, so I was always going to achieve it!" Maryan said about her career aspirations.
Building a Successful Team at JMW Solicitors
Maryan joined JMW Solicitors five years ago as co-head of the residential real estate team in London. Under her leadership, the team has expanded from 10 to 25 professionals. Most recently, she was promoted to board member while on maternity leave after giving birth to her second child.
"I'm particularly proud to have achieved this at a firm that values ambition and successful growth," she noted, identifying this promotion as her proudest professional moment.
London's Property Market: Reasons for Optimism
Despite acknowledging economic challenges, Maryan expressed confidence in the housing market's resilience. "The signs I see suggest that happily people continue to buy and sell houses," she observed, highlighting ongoing transaction activity even during uncertain times.
When asked about her favorite aspect of working in London, Maryan praised the city's "unrivalled buzz with an abundance of activity and entrepreneurship." Her only complaint was the distance from her home in Suffolk, though she joked about trying not to bore colleagues with stories of train delays.
Mentorship and Career Philosophy
Maryan credits colleague Jodi Lund as a significant mentor who has provided valuable guidance on team leadership and career progression. She shared that the best career advice she ever received was "You're only as good as your last deal," while criticizing a university lecturer who focused on the difficulties of entering law rather than offering encouragement.
Her personal motto—"Never give up"—reflects the determination that has characterized her career. This philosophy extends to her current situation, where she's balancing maternity leave with excitement about returning to her new board role.
Personal Life and Professional Balance
Maryan lives in Capel St Mary, a village she describes as "a beautiful place to live, well worth the commute." Weekends are typically spent with family at children's activities or enjoying quality time together. For vacations, she favors Ibiza, where she got married and enjoys returning to the beaches and weather.
When entertaining clients or colleagues in London, she recommends The Ned for lunch (praising its rooftop and proximity to her King's Street office) and The Anthologist on Gresham Street for after-work drinks.
Looking Ahead with Confidence
Maryan's outlook for the coming year remains positive as she prepares to return to work in her expanded role. Her career demonstrates how determination, mentorship, and strategic thinking can lead to success in London's competitive real estate legal sector, even during periods of economic uncertainty.
