A McDonald's restaurant in Balham, South West London, has formally submitted a request to Wandsworth Council to extend its operating hours to 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The fast-food outlet, located on Balham High Road, currently closes at 2am from Sunday to Thursday and at 3am on Fridays and Saturdays. The proposed change would allow it to remain open continuously.
Plans for Extended Hours and Community Benefits
The application, filed by owner Inspire Restaurants Ltd, outlines several key benefits of the extended hours. According to the company, the move would create new employment opportunities, improve working conditions for existing staff by offering more flexible shift patterns, and provide essential services for shift workers in the area. During a licensing hearing on March 24, barrister Constanze Bell, representing Inspire Restaurants, emphasized that the establishment is well-managed and does not currently face issues with antisocial behavior.
Resident Concerns and Company Response
Only one local resident has raised objections to the application, citing potential increases in antisocial behavior, noise, and litter. However, Ms. Bell countered these concerns by highlighting the presence of security staff to manage any issues and noting that the restaurant has a clean record regarding disturbances. She stated, "I'm happy to report that it will improve the position of people who work there. It will allow for the creation of more jobs. It will in no way create any sort of antisocial disturbance."
Regulatory Approvals and Next Steps
Wandsworth Council has already granted planning permission for the restaurant to operate 24/7 for a one-year trial period. However, the changes still require licensing approval to proceed. The council's Licensing Committee is expected to publish its decision in the coming days, which will determine whether the McDonald's can implement the extended hours. This development follows a trend of increasing demand for round-the-clock services in urban areas, particularly to accommodate non-traditional work schedules.
