London's Legal Sector Booms to £60bn as Top Lawyers Earn Millions
London Legal Sector Hits £60bn, Top Lawyers Pocket Millions

Despite ongoing global economic uncertainty, the legal profession in the United Kingdom has firmly established itself as a formidable £60 billion powerhouse. A new report from the Law Society reveals that law firms are experiencing their highest growth in over fifteen years, with top City lawyers securing multi-million pound pay packets.

Record Growth and Profitability Across the Board

The average earnings for law firms surged by more than 11 percent in 2025, marking a significant increase from the 6.1 percent growth recorded in 2024. This robust performance was not confined to the elite Magic Circle firms. In fact, 85 percent of the 121 firms surveyed reported year-on-year fee growth, with more than half achieving double-digit increases.

Key factors driving this financial strength include higher chargeable hours, reduced overheads, and improved lock-up periods. The median number of chargeable hours per fee earner rose to 807, up from 756 in 2024. Additionally, the time between issuing a bill and receiving payment has decreased, further bolstering firm profitability.

Global Firms Break Revenue Barriers

This growth is exemplified by international firms such as Latham & Watkins, which recently announced a record $8.3 billion in revenue. This milestone represents the first time the firm has surpassed the $8 billion mark, having only crossed the $7 billion threshold the previous year.

Soaring Salaries for Partners and Juniors Alike

As London's legal sector continues to thrive, compensation for lawyers at all levels has reached new heights. During the 2024/2025 financial year, the average profit per equity partner (PEP) at major firms like Linklaters, A&O Shearman, Herbert Smith Freehills, and Macfarlanes ranged from over £1.5 million to exceeding £3 million.

Partners at some US firms based in London are reportedly taking home an average of £5 million to £6 million annually. However, the salary boom is not limited to senior figures. Junior lawyers, particularly newly qualified (NQ) solicitors, are now commanding six-figure salaries at top City firms.

Six-Figure Starting Salaries Become the Norm

At the entry level, NQ lawyers are earning base salaries that approach £200,000. Latham & Watkins leads the pack, offering NQs £184,600, while Magic Circle firms have largely standardized around a £150,000 base salary for newly qualified solicitors. This trend highlights the intense competition for legal talent and the sector's robust financial health.

The combination of record firm growth, soaring partner profits, and unprecedented junior salaries underscores the legal industry's resilience and its critical role in the UK economy. As firms continue to optimize operations and expand their global footprint, this upward trajectory appears set to continue.
