New App Detects Smart Glasses to Prevent Secret Filming

In an era where smart glasses have surged in popularity, concerns over privacy and secret filming are mounting. A new app, Nearby Glasses, launched on the Apple App Store, aims to tackle this issue by alerting users when these devices are nearby.

Rising Privacy Fears with Smart Glasses

Since Meta partnered with brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley in 2023, smart glasses have become widespread. However, women's campaigners report increasing misuse by YouTube pranksters and pickup artists who film without consent. Yves Jeanrenaud, a German sociologist, developed the app in response, calling smart glasses 'inevitably used for spying.'

How Nearby Glasses Works

The app scans for distinctive Bluetooth signatures from manufacturers such as Meta, Snap, and Luxottica Group. When it detects smart glasses, it sends a notification: '⚠️ Smart Glasses are probably nearby.' Jeanrenaud notes that while the method isn't perfect—it can trigger false positives from devices like VR headsets—it's a step toward awareness.

Testing the App's Effectiveness

Anna Staddon, social video news lead at Metro, tested Nearby Glasses with Meta Ray-Bans. She found it simple and visual, with a canary icon indicating nearby devices. However, the app failed to detect her glasses during active recording, raising questions about its reliability.

Broader Issues of Harassment and Accountability

Rebecca Goshawk of Solace emphasizes that smart glasses are just one facet of harassment women face. She calls for broader education on boundaries and misogyny. Janaya Walker from the End Violence Against Women Coalition argues that tech platforms must take more responsibility for preventing abuse through their products.

Meta's Stance and Future Implications

Meta's terms of service require safe, respectful use of their glasses, prohibiting harassment or unauthorized filming. The company has been approached for comment. As surveillance technology evolves, apps like Nearby Glasses highlight the need for stronger privacy protections and ethical tech development.
