EastEnders Legend Derek Martin Dies at 92: Family Pays Tribute to 'Devoted Dad'
EastEnders star Derek Martin dies aged 92

The world of British television is in mourning following the death of Derek Martin, the cherished actor who portrayed iconic EastEnders cabbie Charlie Slater for 15 years. Martin passed away on Saturday, 10 January 2026, at the age of 92.

A Family's Heartfelt Tribute

In a statement released by his agent, Sharon Henry, on Sunday, 11 January, Martin's family remembered him as far more than a public figure. "Derek wasn't just a dad to us, he was a friend and supported us through our highs and lows," they shared. They highlighted his endless curiosity, love for people, and generous nature, concluding: "We both miss him terribly." The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

His agent, Sharon Henry, paid her own respects, confirming the sad news and reflecting on his remarkable career. "For over 50 years, Derek was a truly authentic working-class voice in British television and film," she stated. She noted his pride in roles such as Law And Order for the BBC and The Governor, but emphasised that his time as Charlie Slater on EastEnders was particularly cherished.

An EastEnders Icon Remembered

The BBC soap opera also released an official statement, expressing deep sadness at his passing. "From the moment he arrived, Derek's portrayal of Charlie Slater instantly cemented him in the hearts of the audience," a spokesperson said. They drew a parallel between the actor and his character, noting: "Charlie would do anything for his family, and much like his character, Derek would do the same for those around him. He was deeply loved by all those that worked with him."

Martin first arrived in Albert Square in the year 2000, introducing the Slater family to Walford. As the devoted father to daughters Lynne, Kat, Little Mo, and Zoe, he became a cornerstone of the show. His storylines were often intensely dramatic, focusing on family trials including the revelation of Kat's abuse and his arrest for GBH while protecting Little Mo.

A Lasting Legacy On and Off Screen

Although Charlie Slater left the Square in 2011, Martin returned for guest appearances before the character's emotional final send-off in 2016, dying from a heart attack. His legacy continued in a poignant 2023 storyline when his great-granddaughter was named Charli in his honour.

Born in Bow, east London in April 1933, Martin remained a passionate advocate for the show he helped make famous. In 2022, he publicly called for the series to reintroduce more light-hearted moments, arguing it had become "irrelevant" and "miserable." He fondly recalled scenes of Charlie sharing beers with friends on the allotments, stating, "You've got to have humour because there's always something to laugh about in life."

Even after leaving, he remained connected to the fans, often being stopped by the public. "Every day, I get stopped by Joe Public. They say, 'Charlie' – because they still use my character's name – 'what's happened with EastEnders?'" he once revealed, underscoring the enduring bond he forged with viewers across the nation.
