A banished contestant from the current season of BBC's hit show The Traitors has shared a bizarre real-life encounter that saw her questioned by police, all thanks to a piece of questionable social media advice.
The Unusual Police Encounter
Fiona, a 62-year-old local government officer, revealed the incident on the companion show The Traitors: Uncloaked, hosted by Ed Gamble. The conversation turned to managing post-show fame, with Fiona explaining her son was handling her Instagram as she was clueless about social media.
Seeking guidance on navigating the online world, she was told to avoid using her personal phone for social media and instead get a 'burner phone'. Despite her belief that such devices were only for "drug addicts and gun dealers," she followed the advice.
'The Man's Gone Out The Back To Get It'
Fiona recounted visiting a local shop and asking the shopkeeper for a burner phone. As he went to the back to fetch one, two police officers arrived and approached her directly.
They asked if she had indeed requested a burner phone, to which she innocently replied, "Yes, the man's gone out the back to get it." The officers then questioned her motive for wanting such a device.
When Fiona explained it was for social media, the police appeared perplexed by her use of the term "burner phone" rather than a more common phrase like "pay as you go phone."
Jokes and Aftermath on Uncloaked
The story was met with amusement from the show's guests, including Charlotte Church and former Traitor Amanda. Host Ed Gamble jokingly suggested the police were trying to set her up.
Fiona retorted, "I mean do I look like the type?", prompting Amanda to quip, "You didn't look like a Traitor, Fiona."
The incident serves as a humorous footnote to Fiona's time on the treacherous reality show, highlighting the unexpected consequences of taking unconventional advice. The Traitors: Uncloaked returns next Wednesday at 9.05pm on BBC One.
