In an unlikely turn of events, a 42-year-old man from southwest China has found global fame and fortune by perfecting an impression of former US President Donald Trump. Ryan Chen, from Chongqing, has amassed millions of followers across social media platforms, not through political satire, but by channelling Trump's unmistakable bravado to showcase Chinese culture and humour.
From Architecture to Viral Stardom
Chen's journey to becoming the 'Chinese Trump' was accidental. He initially started making online videos as a 'back-up plan' from his career in architecture, a sector hit hard by China's property crisis. While his early content, which included English lessons, saw moderate success, his life changed in 2025. A friend challenged him to imitate Donald Trump, and the videos went viral, coinciding with Trump's return to the White House.
Chen, who had never visited the United States before this year, told AFP that Trump is "an endless well that never runs dry" for generating online traffic. He meticulously replicates the former president's outstretched hand gestures, stage presence, and favourite buzzwords like 'tremendous' and 'amazing'. Despite the detailed impersonation, Chen insists he is not politically motivated. "I'm not into politics, but I think he is a very good entertainer," he said.
Building a Cross-Cultural Bridge
Chen uses his Trump persona as a vehicle for content that lightheartedly presents Chinese cuisine, customs, and cultural differences. His videos often feature him joking with foreigners and even dancing to the Village People's 'YMCA', a Trump rally staple. He sees his role as that of a 'bridge' connecting international audiences curious about urban China with Chinese viewers keen to understand foreign humour.
His profile skyrocketed further in April 2025 when he appeared on a livestream hosted by the American YouTuber IShowSpeed, who has over 47 million subscribers and was visiting China at the time. Chen now boasts over a million followers on Instagram, nearly as many on TikTok, and more than 2.5 million on Chinese platforms. He is often recognised on the streets of Chongqing, a fame he attributes to sounding like a 'native speaker' and constantly following news about Trump, whom he calls "a goldmine of funny material."
Turning Fame into a Career
What began as an online experiment has evolved into a full-time career. Chen is now able to make a living through brand promotions, event appearances, and corporate parties. "My main source of income is advertising," he revealed, noting that brands from the automotive, digital product, gaming, and dairy industries hire him for campaigns.
Chen has also obtained a US visa and is currently visiting the country for the first time. With Trump reportedly set to visit China later this year, Chen has extended an invitation for the former president to come to Chongqing and "try out hotpot". However, Chen has no "burning desire" for an actual meeting, fearing it would quickly become a diplomatic affair. "I'm just a comedian," he stated firmly. "I have no political aspirations."
For Ryan Chen, Donald Trump has become more than a subject of imitation; he feels "like a next-door neighbour". By leveraging the former president's global recognisability, Chen has not only boosted his own career but also created a unique, apolitical channel for cultural exchange, proving that sometimes, the key to international understanding is a good impression and a sense of humour.
