Robby Hoffman's Netflix Special 'Wake Up' Declared Comedy Gold by UK Viewers
Netflix's 'Wake Up' Stand-Up Special Hailed as Comedy Gold

Netflix subscribers across the UK are flooding social media with praise for what they are calling the 'best stand-up special they’ve ever seen'. The buzz surrounds 'Wake Up', the debut Netflix special from Emmy Award-winning comedian Robby Hoffman, which landed on the streaming service just in time for the Twixmas lull.

From Hasidic Brooklyn to Netflix Stardom

Robby Hoffman's path to comedy was unconventional. She grew up in a Hasidic Jewish family in Brooklyn as one of ten children. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she reflected on her early knack for humour, describing herself as a 'class clown' and a 'bit of a Dennis the Menace' after earning a scholarship to a prestigious school. Initially planning a pragmatic career in accounting to support her family, Hoffman's life changed after discovering the Just for Laughs comedy festival.

She turned down a job at an accounting firm to pursue comedy, building a career as a writer on shows like The Chris Gethard Show, Baroness Von Sketch Show, and Workin’ Moms. Her breakthrough to a wider audience came with her role as Randi in the acclaimed series Hacks, starring alongside Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder—a performance that earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2025.

Critical Acclaim and Viewer Adoration for 'Wake Up'

Directed by the acclaimed comedian John Mulaney, who called Hoffman a 'legend at the top of her game', 'Wake Up' was released on Netflix in December 2025. The streaming service bills the special as 'hilariously pushing the limits of comedy with red-hot, controversial takes'. The response from critics and audiences has been overwhelmingly positive.

Viewers have taken to platforms like Instagram to share their enthusiasm. One user, Marceline, posted: 'Just saw this last night, it was HILARIOUS. So funny. Love Robby.' Others echoed the sentiment, with Adriane calling it 'hands down one of the best stand ups in a long time' and Alexander stating it was 'legitimately one of the best stand up I’ve seen in years.' Some fans were so impressed they watched it twice in a row, laughing even harder the second time.

What's Next for the Breakout Star?

Despite the sudden surge in mainstream attention, Hoffman emphasises she is not an overnight success. She told The Los Angeles Times, 'I never had connections or the fast track in any way, shape or form. So, I just got used to slow and steady wins the race.' Her patience is now paying dividends.

Following the success of Wake Up, Hoffman is exceptionally busy. She is currently filming the fifth season of Hacks, developing her own television show, and is set to appear in a new comedy series from Steve Carell and Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence. She is also preparing for an upcoming stand-up tour.
