Women Writer's Festival Returns to Etcetera Theatre in Camden
Women Writer's Festival Returns to Etcetera Theatre

The Etcetera Theatre, an award-winning fringe venue nestled in the vibrant heart of Camden Town, is set to host the fourth Women Writer's Festival, launching on February 27 and running through March 31. This celebrated festival, founded in 2023 and supported by Arts Council England, has rapidly evolved into a crucial platform dedicated to amplifying bold, exciting new theatre created by women and female-identifying writers.

A Legacy of Laughter and Premieres

The Etcetera Theatre boasts a rich history of launching careers, having hosted early works by theatrical giants like Alan Ayckbourn and Alan Bennett, as well as comedy legends such as Al Murray, Bill Bailey, and Russell Brand. Continuing this tradition of innovation, the Women Writer's Festival presents a diverse programme spanning 60 solo shows. The lineup includes original plays, cabaret performances, spoken word, comedy sets, staged readings, discussion panels, and even live custom poetry written on demand, showcasing a dynamic mix of both emerging and established voices from across the United Kingdom.

Festival Highlights and Premieres

The festival schedule is packed with notable productions. Highlights include Handala, a journey through Palestine that won the Best Solo Performance Award at the 2024 Hollywood Fringe Festival, performing on March 9 at 1pm. Audiences can also enjoy Yasmina Reza's award-winning, witty comedy Art from March 11 to 14 at 5pm and 7pm. The programme addresses contemporary issues with shows like Burn Baby Burn: LA Inferno, exploring climate change on March 13 at 9pm. A significant world premiere is Troubled Love, which delves into the complex and unlikely love affair between Nazi academic Martin Heidegger and his later famous Jewish student, Hannah Arendt, running from March 23 to 28 at 7pm, and on March 29 at 6pm.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The festival extends a special invitation to younger audiences. This Saturday, February 28 at 3pm, children aged three to eight are invited to Serena and the Little Blue Dog, a fun, interactive hour of storytelling. The event is curated by Rosemary Clunie, author of the children's book Serena and the Little Blue Dog, published by Bloomsbury and shortlisted for The Week Junior Book Awards.

"My events are designed to stimulate the imagination and creativity of young voices, giving them the confidence to tell their own stories," Clunie explains. The session will centre on a reading of her book and will actively investigate the core elements of storytelling, encouraging children to create and share their own narratives together.

Championing Diversity and Community

Each year, the Women Writer's Festival programme passionately celebrates diversity, creativity, and the profound power of women's storytelling. It champions voices that urgently need to be heard and creates essential space for audiences to engage with fresh stories and unique perspectives. In an era marked by increasing isolation and digitisation, the festival underscores the vital importance of cherishing and supporting live theatre, new writing, and comedy, especially within local grassroots communities.

Let us all join in—adults and children alike—and prepare to be surprised, inspired, and to laugh and cheer together. The Women Writer's Festival at the Etcetera Theatre promises a month of exceptional theatrical experiences that highlight the indispensable contributions of women writers to the cultural landscape.
