Eid Shopping on Green Street: Finding Two Outfits for Under £40 Amid Crowds
Eid Shopping on Green Street: Two Outfits for Under £40

With Eid-ul-Fitr approaching rapidly, the festive shopping rush has taken over London's Green Street, creating a vibrant and crowded atmosphere. This reporter embarked on a mission to find an Eid outfit with just £40, discovering that despite the overwhelming crowds, excellent deals were available for those willing to navigate the bustling shops.

The Green Street Shopping Experience

Green Street, historically known for its connections to West Ham United's former Boleyn Ground stadium and the Green Street football films, has transformed into London's premier destination for South Asian shopping. The street serves as the boundary between East and West Ham and features primarily South Asian clothing, shoe, and jewelry shops, alongside a smaller but significant number of Afro-Caribbean stores and numerous food establishments.

Choosing Sunday for the shopping expedition proved challenging due to massive crowds filling both the street and shops. The timing coincided with the final days before Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan and is expected to fall on Thursday, March 19 or Friday, March 20, depending on moon sightings.

Navigating the Crowded Boutiques

The shopping journey began with £40 in hand, a reasonable budget considering many new arrival items in shops like Mehndi and Imaani were priced between £25-30. Shiffonz, one of the most popular stores on the street, was so packed that entering required significant effort. The shop featured adorable matching shalwar kameez sets for adults and children, along with numerous new arrivals.

Shalwar kameez, the traditional South Asian outfit consisting of a long shirt or dress paired with trousers, dominated the collections throughout Green Street. Most shops had dedicated Ramadan and Eid collections with special deals, creating an atmosphere of festive urgency among shoppers.

East Shopping Centre Discoveries

Moving down the busy street led to the East Shopping Centre, home to various boutiques and eateries. Jilbabs 'R' Us offered abaya collections – loose dresses typically worn by Muslim women in parts of the Middle East and North Africa. Their collections included complete sets with abaya, slip dress, belt, and hijab for £35, which represented the upper limit of the budget.

After trying on a beautiful silk/satin abaya set with gorgeous colors and patterns, sizing issues necessitated switching to a different color in the same style. The purchase marked the first successful acquisition of the shopping trip.

The Return to Imaani

Other stores in the mall, including Dina collections, offered 20 percent discounts on their entire Ramadan collections. However, the desire for a traditional Desi outfit led back to Imaani, following the common Green Street shopping phenomenon of returning to the first shop visited.

The chosen outfit featured a beautiful floral shalwar kameez with a batwing style top and matching dupatta (shawl) with lovely floral patterns. Sales assistants admired the outfit so much they purchased it for themselves. The £30 price tag, while slightly exceeding the original per-outfit budget target, represented excellent value for such a detailed ensemble.

Shopping Success and Lessons Learned

The shopping expedition resulted in two complete outfits purchased for approximately £65 total, with individual pieces costing between £30-35. The entire process took just one hour and thirty minutes, concluding around 6pm as Iftar time approached.

The experience demonstrated that Green Street shopping can easily lead to getting carried away, but also offers numerous affordable options for those seeking festive attire. Most shops along Green Street maintain operating hours from 11am to 6pm daily, with convenient access via Upton Park Station located on the same road.

To break the fast after the successful shopping trip, Yamin Chinese King provided chicken and paneer bites before heading home. The moral of the story remains clear: Green Street offers both temptation and value during the Eid shopping season, creating memorable experiences amid the festive crowds.
