Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has shared a story of how her 12-year-old daughter, North West, directly confronted online trolls who criticised the pre-teen's 'disturbing' Halloween costume.
North's Controversial Halloween Look
The incident unfolded after North, whose father is rapper Kanye West, posted a series of Halloween outfits on the joint TikTok account she shares with her mother, called 'Kim and North'. One particular costume, described by the 44-year-old Kardashian as 'opium Powerpuff Girls', sparked significant controversy online.
The 12-year-old's look featured fake tattoos and piercings, a black dental grill, and striking blue contact lenses. Speaking on a YouTube episode of Complex's GOAT Talk series with her 'All's Fair' co-star Niecy Nash-Betts, Kim revealed that online commenters had labelled her daughter's aesthetic as 'disturbing' and 'horrible'.
A Tween's Direct Clapback
Kim explained that North was genuinely confused by the outraged public response. 'And she was like, "I don't get it, it's like a Halloween costume, like it's all fake,"' the SKIMS founder recounted. It was this bewilderment that prompted North to take matters into her own hands.
'So she takes my phone, and she writes back to a comment,' Kim told the 55-year-old actress. The pre-teen's sharp retort was simply: 'This is such a non-issue.'
The comment was left under a Daily Mail Australia TikTok post that carried the headline 'North West, 12, worries fans with new look.' The response was so assured that many online assumed it was Kim herself who had written it. 'Then online, it was like, "Kim defends North to the end on this look,"' she laughed.
Managing Online Presence and Past Criticism
This is not the first time North's fashion choices have drawn public scrutiny. In August, her outfit while in Rome with her mother—a corseted top, long blue hair, a skirt, and chunky boots—led to comments that the pre-teen was dressed too maturely for her age, prompting some fans to defend the mother and daughter.
Kim clarified the rules governing North's online presence during the talk. 'North, if she ever posts a TikTok, it's on my phone, so she has to ask my approval, and then I post it,' she explained. 'So the comments, all that's on my phone.' This system is why there was initial confusion over who had written the clapback. The bio for their joint account, which has a staggering 19.3 million followers, explicitly states it is 'managed by an adult.'
Niecy Nash-Betts was clearly impressed by North's handling of the situation, quipping during their conversation about the 'GOAT clapback to haters', 'Imma put that one in my bag of tricks.' Currently, comments are turned off on their popular TikTok channel, where each video regularly garners millions of views.
