The Trouser Turn-Up Returns: From Harry Styles to Paris Fashion Week
Trouser Turn-Up Trend Returns in Fashion

The Return of the Trouser Turn-Up

A classic styling trick has reemerged as a major fashion statement: the trouser turn-up. From music icons to runway models, this simple yet effective detail is transforming outfits across the globe. Harry Styles showcased perfectly turned-up pinstripe trousers at the Brit Awards, while actor Chase Infiniti demonstrated the trend at Paris Fashion Week. Even JW Anderson's latest collection for Uniqlo features prominent turn-ups on various trouser styles, signaling this trend's widespread adoption.

Preppy Origins and Modern Revival

The turn-up has deep roots in preppy fashion traditions, with brands like Alex Mill making it a signature element. According to Aurora Benson, branded womenswear buying manager at John Lewis, there has been "a significant move toward the turn-up" among street stylers at recent fashion weeks. "It's a simple way to update existing denim, adding immediate visual interest to an outfit without the need for extra layers," she explains.

Muffy Aldrich, editor of the blog Salt Water New England: The Thing Before Preppy, traces the turn-up's origins to British royalty. "Reportedly King Edward VII rolled up his trousers at Ascot, thus ensuring their immortality," she notes. Despite its British beginnings, the style became closely associated with Ivy League and American east-coast fashion.

Mastering the Perfect Turn-Up

While turn-ups appear effortless, achieving the perfect look requires attention to detail. Melanie Wilkinson, styling editor at The Guardian, emphasizes that "success hinges on lots of factors." The ideal trouser shape for turn-ups is "a close-fitting straight leg, or a slightly tapered leg." Wilkinson warns that jeans that are too wide will cause turn-ups to "flap about and fall down."

Denim quality significantly impacts turn-up success. "Stiff selvedge is ideal as it's denser," Wilkinson explains. "It really holds the shape. High-street styles which have elastane mixed in and aren't woven so tightly make the turn-up harder."

Experts disagree slightly on the perfect turn-up height. Somsack Sikhounmuong, creative director of Alex Mill, recommends "about a one-inch" cuff, while Aldrich believes "1.5 inches is closer to perfect." Both agree that a single turn-up can appear unfinished, while a double turn-up risks looking bulky unless the trousers are sufficiently long.

Why Turn-Ups Matter Now

The resurgence of turn-ups coincides with broader fashion cycles. Sikhounmuong observes that "everything in fashion is connected - over-the-knee boots trend when skirts shorten, loud colours reemerge after seasons of 'quiet luxury', and cuffed hems are no different." He suggests that after seasons of elaborate footwear, "it makes sense to roll up your pants and show off those shoes."

Aldrich offers a more philosophical perspective, noting that turn-ups "allow a garment to be both crisp and ready for horsing around. They are functional, with the weight of the cuffs helping trousers look straight and presentable." She adds that "classic preps love them so much that they wear them even when it makes no sense, like on boats, despite them getting caught on cleats."

The Business of Turn-Ups

From a manufacturing perspective, turn-ups represent additional fabric and cost. Aldrich explains that clothing companies sometimes remove them "to cut costs." When designers make turn-ups "too big, and as with shoulders on jackets or fins on cars, by making them trendy, they assure their obsolescence one or two seasons hence."

However, properly executed turn-ups offer "an insulation from trendiness," according to Aldrich. "Since getting cuffs done the right size represents a bit of an effort these days, they give a distinctive look. And better yet, they do it without most people being able to pinpoint why."

The trouser turn-up's return demonstrates how classic styling elements can find new relevance in contemporary fashion. Whether inspired by preppy traditions or modern celebrity style, this simple detail continues to prove that sometimes the smallest adjustments make the biggest impact on an outfit's overall aesthetic.
