EastEnders Legend Elizabeth Kelly Dies at 104

The British television world is mourning the loss of Elizabeth Kelly, the beloved actress best known for her iconic role as the sharp-tongued Nellie Ellis in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. She has died at the remarkable age of 104, leaving behind a legacy that spanned over four decades on screen.

A Life and Career in the Spotlight

Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1921, Elizabeth Kelly embarked on her television career relatively late in life. Her first major breakthrough came at the age of 50, when she landed the role of the penny-pinching Edie Burgess in the legendary ITV soap Coronation Street. This pivotal moment launched her into becoming a familiar and cherished face across British living rooms.

From Albert Square to Indie Film

Her career encompassed a wide array of popular programmes. She graced the screens of shows including Home and Away, Grange Hill, Emmerdale, Heartbeat, and The Bill. However, it was her tenure on EastEnders from 1993 to 2000 that cemented her status as a soap legend. Appearing in 138 episodes, she played Nellie Ellis, the formidable relative of Pauline Fowler.

Nellie became a fan favourite on Albert Square, known for her witty barbs, frequent clashes with Arthur Fowler, and her memorable habit of moving her belongings into the Fowler household. Kelly also showcased her versatility with a role in the cult indie film 24 Hour Party People in 2002, starring alongside Steve Coogan.

A Peaceful Passing and Lasting Legacy

Elizabeth Kelly passed away peacefully on Christmas Day last year. She had retired from acting in 2007 following her final role in the series The Royal, choosing to spend her later years with family in North Yorkshire before moving into care homes.

Father Eddie Gubbins of St Peter’s Church, who often visited her, shared his memories with The Sun. ‘She was a very strong lady and had a beautiful voice,’ he said. ‘She had a very peaceful death in the end. She was a beautiful lady and very gracious.’

A funeral service will be held to honour her life at St Peter’s Church in Scarborough on Tuesday, the 17th of February, followed by a private burial for family.

Remembering a Television Icon

Elizabeth Kelly is survived by a daughter, a son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She leaves behind an indelible mark on British popular culture, remembered not only for her sharp wit and unforgettable performances but also for her longevity and dedication to her craft. Her journey from a late start in television to becoming a cornerstone of British soap opera history remains an inspiring chapter in the nation's entertainment story.
