Sydney Sweeney's Role in The Devil Wears Prada 2 Removed in Final Cut
Sydney Sweeney has been excised from the completed version of The Devil Wears Prada 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2006 fashion industry classic. The 28-year-old actress, known for her role in Euphoria, had filmed a brief cameo appearance playing herself, but her scene was ultimately cut during the editing process.
Creative Decision Behind the Removal
According to a report by Entertainment Weekly, the decision to remove Sweeney's cameo was described as a creative one, specifically because "it didn't work structurally" within the film's narrative. The scene, which reportedly ran for approximately three minutes, was positioned near the beginning of the movie and featured Sweeney being styled by Emily Charlton, the character portrayed by Emily Blunt.
The production team expressed gratitude for Sweeney's participation, making the removal a difficult choice. Despite this cut, the sequel maintains numerous celebrity cameos, including a significant appearance by Lady Gaga, who also contributed songs to the soundtrack alongside rapper Doechii.
Sequel Details and Returning Cast
The Devil Wears Prada 2, scheduled for release on May 1, sees the return of Anne Hathaway as journalist Andy Sachs and Meryl Streep as the formidable Miranda Priestley, editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine. The character of Miranda is famously inspired by former Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
The sequel continues Andy's story as she returns to work with Miranda after twenty years, now as a features editor. Stanley Tucci reprises his role as art director Nigel, while new cast members include:
- Simone Ashley from Bridgerton as Miranda's assistant
- Sir Kenneth Branagh as Miranda's husband
- Patrick Brammall as Andy's new love interest
- Lucy Liu in an undisclosed role
Industry Perspectives and Film Context
In the lead-up to the sequel's release, both Meryl Streep and Anna Wintour appeared on the cover of Vogue's May issue. Wintour discussed the portrayal of the fashion industry, noting that the original film successfully highlighted fashion as a significant global economic force.
Streep addressed her return to the iconic role, stating that the sequel has "located something true about the fashion business now." The plot involves Miranda relying on her former assistant Emily, now a senior executive at Dior, to help keep Runway magazine operational.
The original film was adapted from Lauren Weisberger's novel, which drew upon her experiences as a former assistant at Vogue. The sequel promises to explore how the fashion industry has evolved over the past two decades while maintaining the sharp wit and dramatic tension that made the first film a cultural phenomenon.
