Zootropolis 2 Claims Hollywood Animation Crown

Disney's animated sequel, Zootropolis 2, has officially become the highest-grossing animated film in Hollywood history. The film has amassed a staggering $1.7bn (£1.3bn) at the global box office, setting a new industry benchmark.

Breaking Records and Surpassing Milestones

Released in November 2025, the film swiftly overtook the previous record holder, Inside Out 2, which had earned $1.69bn following its 2024 debut. This achievement places Zootropolis 2 among the top-10 highest-grossing films of all time, sharing the list with cinematic giants like Avengers: Endgame and Titanic.

The movie, titled Zootopia 2 in some regions, also set a remarkable pace by becoming the fastest animated Hollywood movie to surpass the $1bn (£750m) milestone. Its success was turbocharged by a record-breaking opening over the US Thanksgiving weekend, where it earned $559.5m (£417.2m) in just five days.

Global Reception and Industry Context

Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, attributed the film's success to its fans. "This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible," he stated. "Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement, and we're grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life."

The sequel reunites audiences with rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and fox con-artist Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) as they investigate a mysterious new reptilian resident, Gary De'Snake (Ke Huy Quan).

While Zootropolis 2 now leads the Hollywood animation field, it's important to note that the global top spot for an animated film is still held by China's Ne Zha 2, which took $2.2bn (£1.65bn) last year.
