A man preparing for an 18-hour flight from Gatwick Airport was left stunned after his snack haul from WH Smith cost him £58.70. Carmie Sellitto shared his experience on Instagram, questioning why airport snacks are so expensive.
The Pricey Snack Run
Carmie began his video by saying, "I need to buy a bunch of snacks that will last me the 18 hours, but for some reason this place is so expensive and I have no idea why." He picked up a packet of dried mangoes for £6, sweet chilli rice crackers, and a luxury nut and raisin mix, remarking that the total would likely hit £20 already, which he called "a bit disgusting."
He noted a £5 bag of Haribo Tangfastics and questioned whether anyone would pay £10 for giant Mentos mints or £14 for Chupa Chups lollipops. He passed on £18 Ferrero Rocher boxes but grabbed a watermelon Push Pop and Smints.
Adding More Items
Carmie added a Reese's White Cup and Galaxy Minstrels, then took advantage of a three-for-two deal on Actiph Water bottles. He also included Rennie for potential heartburn. Reduced Cheez-Its and 20% off Cadbury Dairy Milk Biscoff bars were pleasant finds. He finished with Snack a Jacks, Proper Popcorn, strawberry Vitamin Well, and a Cadbury & More Nutty Praline Crisp bar.
The Final Total
At the self-checkout, Carmie announced the total: £58.70. "Let me know if you think that's worth it. I can't believe how much I spent," he said.
Social Media Reactions
Viewers reacted quickly. One joked, "Probably cheaper to fly first class!" Another said, "That's why I mainly take my own snacks. But I do like a Boots meal deal at the airport." A third pointed out, "You bought four drinks, I thought drinks are included on a long haul flight." A fourth declared, "You could've bought all the snacks before you went to the airport. Which would have probably cost you about £20."
WH Smith and Gatwick Airport have been contacted for comment.
