V&A East Museum to Feature Jikoni's Innovative Restaurant and Cafe
The highly anticipated V&A East Museum in Stratford is set to open next month, and it will include a new dining venue from the team behind the celebrated Marylebone restaurant Jikoni. Café Jikoni is scheduled to launch on April 18, coinciding with the debut of the 7,000 square metre museum, bringing a unique culinary experience to East London.
Global Fusion Cuisine with a Creative Twist
Helmed by the wife and husband duo Ravinder Bhogal and Nadeem Lalani Nanjuwany, Café Jikoni will showcase Ravinder's 'no borders kitchen' philosophy, offering a diverse menu that blends global flavors. Patrons can look forward to signature dishes like the prawn toast Scotch egg, alongside innovative new creations such as macaroni dhal, turmeric and ginger chicken pie, and butter beans aglio e olio topped with zhoug, tahini, and pangrattato breadcrumbs. For lighter options, the cafe will also serve a variety of sausage rolls, crumpets, and cakes.
Inaugural Exhibition and Cultural Significance
The V&A East Museum's opening exhibition, titled The Music is Black: A British Story, will highlight 125 years of Black music in the UK. This landmark showcase will feature over 200 objects, exploring the profound impact of Black artistry on music and culture from 1900 to the present day. The addition of Café Jikoni aligns with the museum's mission to celebrate diversity and community through art and food.
Expanding V&A's East London Presence
This is not the first culinary venture for the V&A in East London. Last year, E5 Bakehouse began operating the cafe at the nearby V&A East Storehouse, establishing a trend of integrating local food offerings with cultural institutions. Café Jikoni aims to build on this by providing a welcoming space that reflects the rich and diverse communities of the capital.
Vision and Impact of Café Jikoni
In a statement about the launch, Bhogal and Nanjuwany expressed their excitement: 'Café Jikoni is a joyful expression and natural evolution of our long-standing mission to cross borders and unite people through food. We're delighted to have a dedicated home within one of the world's greatest institutions, serving up delicious, culturally appropriate food to all who visit us. Our intention is grounded in inclusivity, hospitality, and positive change, creating a home from home for everyone.' The original Jikoni restaurant has received critical acclaim, including a five-star review from Time Out, which praised Bhogal's homely and joyful cooking, and it is recognized as one of London's top sustainable dining spots.
