An artisan bakery located in south London, which has been operating for just over a year, has been officially named the best bakery in the entire country according to the prestigious Baker's Dozen 2026 list published by British Baker's magazine. This annual list celebrates the exceptional quality, creativity, and delicious bread produced by artisan bakeries across the United Kingdom, with representation from nearly all of the nation's major cities.
August Bakery Claims the Top Spot
London secured the coveted number one position as August Bakery, situated on Battersea Rise near Clapham Common, was crowned Britain's Best Bakery. The bakery is run by the husband-and-wife team of Harry Robins and Florrie Beard. The couple initially began their baking journey by setting up a micro-bakery in their Putney flat during the lockdown period, with Harry delivering fresh bread across SW postcodes using his cargo bike.
Today, Harry works in the kitchen alongside head baker Sesilia Adamia, who studied at a culinary school in Dublin, while Florrie expertly manages the front-of-house operations. Their signature items have garnered a loyal following, including their wildly popular sourdough bread, the Kouign Amann (a caramelised French pastry), and a delicious ham, cheese, and fennel seed swirl.
Creative Baked Goods Showcased
Other innovative baked goods featured on their Instagram account include candied orange, chocolate, and Persian lime curd tarts, crème patissière and Bramley apple crumble, as well as quince cheesecake buns, highlighting their commitment to artisanal creativity and quality.
London's Continued Bakery Excellence
Meanwhile, London triumphed once again on the Baker's Dozen list, with Chatsworth Bakehouse in Crystal Palace securing the number three slot. This quirky independent bakery is renowned for serving baked goods packed with substance. One standout item is their Mortadella stuffed pickle pie, described as a "big beast"—a sandwich made from bubbly dough filled with Italian sausage mortadella, shaved onion, a house secret sauce, and finished with dill, olive oil, and parmesan.
Another mighty sandwich offering at Chatsworth Bakehouse is the "Sarniflette," composed of thick-cut smoked ham, whipped reblochon cheese, shoestring potatoes with garlic and thyme salt, grated Comté reserve cheese, mustard, shaved white onion, and a blonde ale pickle relish.
Sweet Treats and Recognition
Chatsworth Bakehouse also supplies an array of sweet treats, such as vanilla-glazed cinnamon rolls, cereal cookies, and the all-too-tempting Guinness cake, solidifying its position as a worthy top-three bakery in the national competition. August Bakery's location on Battersea Rise, near Clapham Common, continues to attract food enthusiasts seeking the finest artisanal bread and pastries in the country.
