South London's Horniman Museum Announces Major Garden Expansion
South London's cherished Horniman Museum is set to reveal a series of exciting new garden attractions next month, marking its 125th anniversary with significant enhancements to its outdoor spaces. The museum, which has been undergoing renovations to its Natural History Gallery, will introduce a nature-themed play area, a family-friendly café, an interactive trail, and a community garden across its expansive 16-acre grounds starting May 21, 2026.
Filling the Void During Renovations
The announcement comes as the museum continues to navigate the temporary absence of its iconic overstuffed walrus, a fan favorite since 1901 that was accidentally overfilled by Victorian taxidermists, resulting in its distinctive lack of wrinkles. The walrus has been removed since March 2024 for gallery renovations, which are now expected to continue until early 2027, extending the walrus-less period for another year.
In the interim, these new garden features aim to provide engaging alternatives for visitors while they await the beloved marine mammal's return.
Detailed Look at the New Attractions
The centerpiece of the garden revamp is the Kusuma Nature Play area, specifically designed for children. This innovative space includes:
- A wooden jetty and slide for adventurous play
- Climbing webs and lookout points to encourage exploration
- Log steps and timber balance beams for physical development
- A den building frame for creative construction
- Special toddler-friendly elements including a collecting table, leaf stools, and a finger maze
The play area's design thoughtfully incorporates local wildlife themes, featuring a dedicated robin-themed section complete with a timber rocker, nest hedge, and artificial robin eggs.
Enhanced Dining and Community Spaces
Adjacent to the play area, the museum will introduce a new family-friendly café operated by the family-owned Colicci group. Visitors can expect the same quality offerings found at the museum's existing eateries, including:
- Signature sourdough pizzas made with slow-fermented dough
- Seasonal ingredients highlighting local produce
- Artisan gelato for sweet treats
- Specialty coffee beverages
The new Community Garden and Gardens Nursery will provide a tranquil retreat from busier areas, offering programming for all ages. Adult activities will focus on nature-based wellbeing through planting, creativity, and art sessions, while younger visitors can participate in practical gardening workshops and seed bomb creation.
The Gardens Nursery has been transformed with a new glasshouse, public terrace, and workshop space that will be accessible to local residents.
Interactive Trail Improvements
The museum has also upgraded its 800-meter Nature Trail with enhanced accessibility features and educational components:
- New ramped access points for improved mobility
- Informative signposts detailing the insects and small creatures inhabiting the trail
- An augmented reality experience called 'Animals Everywhere!' featuring challenges and minigames throughout the grounds
Brovision and Future Developments
This garden transformation represents the first major milestone of the Horniman's ambitious Nature + Love project, which carries a total budget of £10 million. While specific reopening dates for the Natural History Gallery remain undetermined, museum officials have indicated they will release further details about the gallery renovations later this year.
The comprehensive garden upgrades demonstrate the museum's commitment to providing engaging, educational, and accessible experiences for visitors of all ages during this transitional period, ensuring the Horniman remains a vital cultural destination in South London.
