EastEnders' Joel Marshall returns with buzz cut after prison

EastEnders star Max Murray has debuted a dramatically different look as his character Joel Marshall returns to Walford. The actor, who plays the twisted teen, now sports a close-cropped buzz cut, a stark contrast to the long, centre-parted hair that previously defined his on-screen persona. Joel was released from a young offenders unit this week after serving a six-month sentence for attacking his stepmother, Vicki Fowler.

Joel's New Look and Criminal Past

Joel's golden bangs and boyband-style curtains are gone, replaced by the standard prison haircut. According to show insiders, the visual change symbolises his time behind bars. Joel was sent to the unit after brutally assaulting Vicki, played by Alice Haig, as part of a harrowing incel storyline. The attack occurred after months of escalating misogynistic behaviour, including filming an intimate encounter with fellow teen Avani Nandra-Hart without her consent and posting the video online.

Joel's father, Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw), and stepmother Vicki had fled Australia after Joel 'upskirted' a schoolmate. To avoid police involvement, Ross paid the victim's family $50,000 and agreed to leave the country. Despite hopes of a fresh start in Walford, Joel continued consuming radical content from women-hating influencers and attempted to indoctrinate other teens, including Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall), with extreme pornography.

Assault and Aftermath

The violence reached a peak when Joel knocked Vicki unconscious and filmed her lifeless body while spewing hateful rhetoric. He then hid at Tommy's house, but both Tommy and Ross reported him to the police. Joel initially pleaded not guilty, forcing Vicki to testify, but later changed his plea to guilty after Ross intervened. He was sentenced to six months in a young offenders unit.

Vicki's trauma deepened throughout the trial, and she made it clear she would never live under the same roof as Joel again. Ross eventually agreed that upon release, Joel would live with his biological mother, Cleo, rather than return to the family home.

Return to Walford

Next week's episodes show the news of Joel's release spreading through the Square. Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan-Levy) tries to reassure her daughter Avani that Joel will not come back, but his reappearance sends Vicki into a tailspin. She seeks support from her half-sister Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), leading to a confrontation with a furious Avani and Amy Mitchell (Ellie Dadd).

With the entire community against him, it remains to be seen whether Joel's return will be permanent. Show producers have hinted that his reformed appearance may not reflect a reformed character, leaving viewers to wonder if he has truly changed.
