Harry Styles Opens Up About Liam Payne's Tragic Death in Candid Interview
In a heartfelt new interview with Zane Lowe, Harry Styles has shared his profound reflections on the death of his former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne. The conversation, part of an Apple Music promotion for Styles' latest album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, delved into the emotional impact of losing a close friend under such tragic circumstances.
A Deeply Personal Loss
Styles expressed the unique pain of mourning Payne, who died in October 2024 after a fall from a third-floor balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. "It's so difficult to lose a friend," Styles said. "It's difficult to lose any friend, but it's so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways." He further elaborated on the complexities of public grief, noting how it can feel intrusive when others expect a public display of sorrow.
"I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with acknowledging how strange it is to have people own part of your grief in a way," Styles revealed. "I have such strong feelings around my friend passing away. And then suddenly being aware of a desire from other people for you to convey that in some way, or it means you're not feeling what you're feeling, you know?"
Honoring a Legacy Through Music and Life
Payne was a key member of One Direction, the globally successful boyband that sold over 70 million records and performed to sold-out stadiums worldwide. After the group disbanded, Payne pursued a solo career with R&B influences, achieving a Top 10 hit in both the UK and US with his single Strip That Down. Styles remembered him fondly, saying, "I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great."
Styles emphasized that Payne's death served as a pivotal moment for self-reflection. "It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, 'OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?'" he shared. "And I think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest. Like, super special person and really sad."
Tributes from One Direction Bandmates
Other One Direction members have also paid tribute to Payne, highlighting his positive influence and vibrant personality. Niall Horan recalled, "Liam had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious. He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure." Louis Tomlinson added, "It was really, really, impossibly difficult for me to deal with losing Liam." He admitted, "None of us would have admitted it at the time, because you have a lot of pride as a young lad, but we all looked up to him."
New Album and Upcoming Tour
Styles is channeling his emotions into his music career, with his new album Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally released this week. The Guardian's Alexis Petridis described it as "music made in the small hours, with the curtains drawn against the dawn," noting it lacks the unequivocal pop hits of his previous work like As It Was or Watermelon Sugar. Styles will embark on a major tour, including a record-breaking 30-night residency at New York's Madison Square Garden and a full album performance at Manchester's Co-Op Live arena, which will stream on Netflix this Sunday.
