The Dream Date That Felt Too Good to Be True
Slow dancing in the lounge to a carefully curated playlist, I couldn't believe how perfect the day had been. Normally, after just a few hours on a date, I would be anxiously ready to leave, but with Poppy*, I never wanted the moment to end. What began as afternoon drinks transformed into a nine-hour bubble of pure bliss. When she turned to me and asked, "Are you happy?" I could honestly say, for the first time in my dating life, that the answer was absolutely yes.
A Decade of Dating App Disappointments
For the last ten years, I've had an on-again, off-again relationship with every dating app imaginable. Almost all my romantic connections have started online, and while I don't want to bite the hand that feeds me, I have more horror stories than I care to admit. From women declaring their love after only meeting a handful of times to dates who confessed they never wanted to meet in the first place, I've experienced it all.
I'm not completely innocent in this process either. I've hated myself each time I re-downloaded an app seeking validation. But let's be honest, it's nice to be told you're attractive without any strings attached. After a serious relationship left me feeling fragile, I decided to spend 2024 fully embracing my Samantha Jones era, playing the field rather than settling down.
The Connection That Changed Everything
Given that the women-loving-women dating pool is relatively small, this should have been an easy goal to achieve. But everything changed when I met Poppy on Hinge. Staring back at me with big blue eyes and a dimpled smile, I didn't hesitate to swipe right. She was based in an area of London I typically avoided due to multiple bad dating experiences, but she seemed like someone worth making an exception for.
Poppy immediately appeared inviting and friendly through her pictures alone, radiating the kind of energy that made you feel you could share your darkest secrets without judgment. When I reached out, I discovered she was actually in Mexico, finishing a four-month cruise ship contract and due to return to London in three weeks.
Building Something Special From Afar
At that point, I assumed our conversation would fizzle out like so many other matches had before. But the opposite happened. Poppy is a self-confessed talker, but I couldn't believe how effortlessly we sustained endless conversations about work, family, Taylor Swift, how much we each missed intimacy, and even discovering that the cuddly pig she'd bought at a market wasn't actually a pig at all. Nothing was off-limits, creating an overwhelming sense of comfort and connection.
Naturally, it wasn't long before I yearned for her to come home so we could meet in person. I'd only heard her Irish accent in one brief voice note she was embarrassed to send, but every time her name appeared on my phone, I couldn't help but smile.
The Magical First Meeting
Poppy is a nervous flyer despite traveling regularly for work. If I couldn't be there with her physically, I could at least try to be there through music. The Spotify playlist I created for her flight home seemed to do the trick. Even when completely jet-lagged, she reminded me how much she couldn't wait to see me.
As soon as she landed at Heathrow, we scheduled our official date for a few days later. I arrived at a West London pub in a fluster because it had taken me so long to get there, but it was Poppy who was shaking like a leaf. That all changed the moment we returned to our familiar and treasured habit of talking, putting the world to rights while enjoying one vodka after another.
While I couldn't tell exactly how she felt about me, Poppy gave me a sense of calm and grounding that I'd been searching for. Being with her in person only confirmed how much I wanted to be around her. Nine hours later, we returned to her place to cuddle and slow dance, and eventually, as she walked me to the station, we held hands before sharing a goodnight kiss.
The Text That Changed Everything
On my way home, I felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. Maybe there was light at the end of the dating tunnel. Maybe all those disappointing experiences had finally led to something meaningful. Over the next few weeks, we spent every possible moment together, growing closer and sensing there was more to our connection than just a brief fling.
But before either of us had a chance to explore what that might mean, Poppy received a job offer she couldn't afford to turn down. "I've had a firm job offer... I leave for America in a few days," her message read. I cried after reading it, feeling foolish for letting something so new affect me so deeply. Yet, as ridiculous as it might sound, I felt that this single WhatsApp message could change the course of my love life forever.
Navigating the Aftermath
I could tell Poppy felt the same way. She later told me she'd spent two days desperately applying for jobs in London so we could continue dating. To her, I was the only reason to consider staying behind. While she panicked about her future through endless pro-con lists, I tried to be as supportive as possible, all while finding it increasingly difficult to mask just how devastated I was to lose her.
It felt like a monumental loss then, and it still does now. I'm still surprised I didn't cry when I left her at Heathrow. When we parted ways, we both agreed we'd focus on the present rather than the future, though I know we were each trying not to let the other see how sad we truly were.
The Long-Distance Reality
A few months later, I'm pleased to say we're figuring out how to navigate things long-distance without putting pressure on one another. Our WhatsApp chat remains active daily as we share snippets of our lives and discuss what the other is missing. We've both agreed that the other is allowed to date whomever they like until we reunite, though this is easier for me on land with the dating app world still at my fingertips.
Yet without knowing when I'll see her next—Poppy will be gone for at least a year—it's difficult to maintain consistent communication. Even so, neither of us is ready to let go yet. Our perfect first date was the springboard for something bigger than either of us expected, and I plan to discover exactly what that might be.
