Gillian Anderson to Star in West End Revival of Edward Albee's Classic Play
Gillian Anderson, renowned for her role in Sex Education, is set to make a highly anticipated return to the London stage this autumn. She will take on the coveted role of Martha in a revival of Edward Albee's iconic play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, a production she has desired for decades. The announcement has generated significant buzz in the theatre community, marking a major event for West End enthusiasts.
Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
Anderson will be joined by Billy Crudup, star of The Morning Show, who will portray George, Martha's professor husband. The production will be staged in-the-round at the intimate @sohoplace theatre, directed by the acclaimed Marianne Elliott. This innovative staging promises to bring a fresh perspective to the 1962 play, which explores themes of marital conflict and emotional turmoil.
Anderson expressed her excitement about the role, stating, "Martha's rage is inseparable from her longing, her disappointment and her need to be seen – all things still eminently relatable 60 years on." She added, "I've wanted to play Martha for decades, and I'm thrilled Billy Crudup is joining me in the ring as George." This production follows notable past performances, including Uta Hagen on Broadway and Elizabeth Taylor in the film adaptation.
Background and Production Details
Crudup has become a familiar face in London theatre, making his West End debut earlier this year in Harry Clarke and recently appearing in High Noon. Anderson's previous London roles include Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire and Margo Channing in All About Eve, both of which received critical acclaim.
Director Marianne Elliott, known for her upcoming work with Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey, praised the play as "a play of astonishing emotional precision – brutal, witty and deeply human." The production is designed by Miriam Buether and produced by Nica Burns, owner of @sohoplace, and Sonia Friedman Productions. Burns highlighted that this marks "the first American classic" to be presented at the theatre, which opened in 2022.
Additional Cast and Run Information
The cast will also feature Josh Dylan and Phoebe Horn in supporting roles. The play is scheduled to run from 21 September to 19 December, offering audiences a chance to experience this timeless drama during the autumn season. Friedman described it as "one of the defining plays of the modern theatre – raw, ferociously funny and devastating in equal measure."
This revival underscores the enduring relevance of Albee's work, with its exploration of complex human emotions and relationships. Theatre-goers can expect a powerful and immersive experience, blending stellar performances with innovative staging in one of London's newest venues.
