A new Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) has come into effect in the Kent coastal towns of Margate and Ramsgate, banning alcohol consumption in town centres year-round. Those caught violating the order face a fixed penalty of around £100, which can be reduced if paid within 10 to 14 days. Failure to pay may lead to prosecution in court, where fines can reach up to £1,000.
Scope and Duration of the Ban
The PSPO, approved on Thursday and effective from Wednesday, July 1, will run for three years. It also covers Broadstairs and Cliftonville West. The order targets alcohol-related anti-social behaviour, including refusing to hand over drinks when requested by officials. According to the Thanet District Council website, the order is designed to "introduce targeted restrictions to curb alcohol-related disorder, public urination, and defecation for a period of three years."
Reasons Behind the Crackdown
The crackdown follows a series of violent incidents flagged by Kent Police, including attacks on beaches in Broadstairs and Margate, as well as incidents at Margate Railway Station, as reported by the Mirror. Local businesses have also spoken out, with several telling BBC Radio Kent they have been forced to close early due to nearby trouble. One business owner even considered leaving the area, describing the situation as increasingly threatening.
Support from Local Officials
East Thanet MP Polly Billington backed the move, stating: "It's vital for our economy that people feel confident about keeping their doors open to their shop, and actually, [it's vital] for the wellbeing of our residents and our visitors that everybody feels safe." Councillor Heather Keen, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, had spoken in favour of the plans ahead of the vote: "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to share their views. Our communities deserve safe, clean, and welcoming public spaces, and this overwhelming support shows how passionate local people are about protecting their environment." She added: "If Cabinet agrees to implement these proposals, our safety teams and the police will have an effective tool to address persistent issues impacting our towns. We have listened closely to feedback, and while enforcement would always be a last resort, these measures could significantly improve the quality of life across Thanet."
Impact on Londoners and Local Economy
Both Margate and Ramsgate are popular seaside escapes for Londoners. Margate is known for its Victorian charm, wide sandy beaches, and easy train links from the capital, earning it the nickname 'Shoreditch-on-Sea'. Ramsgate attracts visitors with its Royal Harbour and independent food and drink scene. The ban aims to ensure these towns remain safe and welcoming for residents and tourists alike.
