Barry Manilow, 82, Postpones Shows for Lung Cancer Surgery, Aims for February Return
Barry Manilow diagnosed with lung cancer, reschedules shows

Iconic singer Barry Manilow has announced he is undergoing surgery for lung cancer, leading to the postponement of several upcoming live performances. The 82-year-old music legend, known for timeless hits like 'Copacabana' and 'Mandy', stated the disease was caught in its early stages.

Diagnosis and Treatment Plan

In a detailed social media statement, Manilow explained that the discovery followed a lengthy bout of bronchitis. After recovering and returning to his Las Vegas stage, a precautionary MRI ordered by his doctor revealed a cancerous spot on his left lung. The singer emphasised his fortune in the early detection, crediting his physician.

"The doctors do not believe it has spread," Manilow wrote, outlining a hopeful prognosis. His treatment will involve surgery to remove part of the lung, with no current plans for chemotherapy or radiation. He described his recovery regimen as involving "chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns."

Show Postponements and Valentine's Day Goal

As a direct consequence of his diagnosis and scheduled surgery, a series of imminent live dates have been rescheduled. However, the performer has set a clear target for his return. Manilow aims to be back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino in time for Valentine's Day weekend concerts, a testament to his commitment to his audience and his long-standing residency.

This residency is currently in its impressive 16th year, solidifying his status as a staple of the Las Vegas entertainment scene.

Personal Life and Support System

The news brings the singer's personal life into focus, particularly the role of his husband and manager, Garry Kief. The pair were in a relationship for over 35 years before marrying secretly in 2014, with Manilow publicly coming out in 2017.

In a 2023 interview, Manilow reflected on Kief's crucial support during the peak of his fame in the 1970s. He described the loneliness of returning to empty hotel rooms night after night and credited meeting Kief with providing a vital anchor. "I had somebody to cry with or to celebrate with," he said, highlighting the importance of companionship amidst the chaos of stardom.

Fans worldwide now await updates on his health and look forward to his promised return to the stage in February.
