Gilet Saves Man in Bolton Cafe Knife Attack, Owner Offers Free Meals for Life
Shocking CCTV footage has emerged showing a man bursting into a cafe in Bolton and launching a knife attack on a customer during breakfast. The incident, which occurred at The Deli on Tonge Moor Road, left two men with stab wounds, though neither injury is believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.
Heroic Intervention and Protective Clothing
The video captures an unsuspecting victim sitting at a table, eating his breakfast, when a man enters the cafe, pulls out a knife, and lunges at his chest. The two tussle as the younger victim stands up and punches the suspected knifeman in the face. In a dramatic turn, the cafe owner heroically wrestled the knife away from the attacker, who then sat down in a chair before police arrived.
After the altercation, the victim patted himself down and inspected his gilet, which is said to have helped protect him from serious injury. In recognition of his bravery, the cafe owner announced that the victim will receive free orders for life for helping to protect staff during the terrifying ordeal.
Police Response and Investigation
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of assault following the incident. Officers located two men with stab wounds—one inside the cafe and another outside—and treated them at the scene. The attacks are being treated as linked and mental health-related.
Detective Chief Inspector Mike Sharples from the Bolton District stated, "We currently have a man detained and officers are conducting extensive enquiries as part of a comprehensive investigation." He reassured the local community that there is no wider threat, emphasizing that this is an isolated incident. Extra patrols have been deployed in the area to address concerns.
Cafe's Response and Community Impact
In a Facebook statement, The Deli addressed the incident, noting that it "spilled into our premises" from outside. The cafe assured customers and staff that everyone is safe and cooperating with GMP's investigation. Due to the disruption, the establishment closed for the remainder of the day, apologizing for any inconvenience caused.
Several police cars were seen parked on Tonge Moor Road afterward, with officers conducting house-to-house enquiries. The force is aware of a video circulating online and encourages anyone with concerns to speak with officers on patrol.
This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of public safety and the importance of community vigilance. As investigations continue, authorities are working to provide support and ensure such events do not recur in the area.
