Bristol Girl's Nightmare Ordeal After Sexual Abuse at Age Eight
A young girl from Bristol, who was sexually abused when she was just eight years old, has described being tormented by persistent nightmares that her attacker will come back to find her. The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, saw her abuser, paedophile Matthew McKenzie, 47, sentenced to eight years in prison on Tuesday for a series of horrific offences.
Predator Preyed on Child in Family Home
Matthew McKenzie exploited the trust of a family in Bristol during a stay at their home in June 2023, where he sexually abused the young girl. Last month, he was found guilty at Bristol Crown Court of sexual touching of a girl under 13, along with two charges of engaging in sexual activity with a child under 13. The court heard how McKenzie had groomed his way into the family's lives, betraying their confidence to carry out the abuse.
Victim's Harrowing Impact Statement
In a powerful victim impact statement, the girl revealed the profound psychological scars left by the abuse. "I am feeling angry, sad and scared, and I have been having nightmares about what happened to me," she said. "Every time I close my eyes all I see is him and also it has affected my school work. I can't trust anyone and I have been feeling worthless and empty."
She detailed how the nightmares specifically revolve around McKenzie's actions, causing her to wake up crying in panic, fearing he is coming for her. The court was informed that the girl, once a very self-confident child, has had her personality drastically altered by the trauma.
Mother's Anguish and Family's Courage
The victim's mother expressed her devastation, stating, "What Matthew did has affected my girl's whole life... I feel absolutely sick about what Matthew has done. Matthew has ruined my daughter's life. He has taken her innocence and made her do something despicable for his own selfish pleasure, which is repulsive." She emphasized how McKenzie had preyed on her innocent daughter, grooming his way into their trust only to betray it utterly.
DC Emma Parry, the officer in the case, praised the victim and her family for their remarkable courage. "We are really pleased to see Matthew McKenzie be jailed for these sickening offences, and that would not have been possible without their support," she said. "We sincerely hope the conclusion of these legal proceedings can help the girl, with the unrelenting love of her family, can now begin to look to the future because she deserves that more than anyone."
Sentencing and Protective Measures
Matthew McKenzie was sentenced to eight years in prison, with a minimum term of six years before he can be considered for release. In addition to his prison sentence, he will be subject to a 15-year sexual harm prevention order and will remain on the Sex Offenders' Register indefinitely. This ensures he is monitored and restricted from contact with children, preventing him from harming others in the future.
The mother highlighted the importance of this outcome, noting that his conviction will stop him from hurting any other child he might encounter. The case underscores the severe and lasting impact of child sexual abuse, while also showcasing the resilience of victims and the critical role of legal justice in providing some measure of closure and protection.
