Mother Haunted by Daughter's Brutal Murder and Dismemberment Three Years On

Three years after the horrific murder of Holly Bramley, her mother Annette remains tormented by the gruesome details of her death. Holly, aged 26, was stabbed four times by Nicholas Metson, her partner of eight years, before her body was dismembered into 224 parts and discarded in the River Witham near Lincoln.

Annette cannot escape the haunting images of her daughter's final moments. "I think about the actual moment a lot," she reveals. "At the time, I told the police to tell me everything as I needed answers. I said it can't be worse than what is pictured in my head – they said it was." She describes learning the extent of the dismemberment: "I was sitting down and then they told me how many parts they had found in the river. As a family we sat there and said how many parts can a body be chopped into?"

Vivid Memories and Ongoing Trauma

Annette's grief is compounded by vivid, recurring visions of the crime. "I can see her standing there in the bedroom with her coat on and I think of the moment it must have happened," she says. "I feel the same every year. It will be a solemn day for me. I try to picture the scene. It is macabre." The trauma has manifested in persistent nightmares. "When we found out about Holly I had dreams time after time. They went on for quite a while. It doesn't matter how many times, I always picture the moment it must have happened."

Nicholas Metson was sentenced to a minimum of 19 years in prison for Holly's murder. Although the exact events of March 17, 2023, remain unclear, the trial judge confirmed that Holly was stabbed multiple times in her bedroom before being moved to the bathroom, where she was dismembered. Her remains were then stored in the kitchen larder, placed into shopping bags, and dumped.

Campaign for Change: Holly's Law

On the third anniversary of Holly's death, designated as Holly's Day, Annette was surrounded by friends, family, and supporters who gathered to remember her daughter. The event also highlighted the ongoing petition for Holly's Law, which aims to establish a nationwide register naming perpetrators of animal cruelty—a behavior often linked to domestic abuse and homicide. The petition has garnered 54,674 signatures and has been raised in Parliament.

Metson had a history of violence, with previous convictions for offences against former partners in 2013, 2016, and 2017. He also harmed Holly's pets and used them to control her before her murder, underscoring the connection between animal cruelty and domestic violence.

This case aligns with broader efforts to combat violence against women, such as the "This Is Not Right" campaign launched by Metro in November 2024, in partnership with Women's Aid, to address the epidemic of gender-based violence.
